I used a Waterman Expert fountain for 2 or 3 years before I got the current MB. My wife has had the same Rotring rollerball for almost 15 years and loves it.

No question, fountain pens can be messy if you don't develop the right habits. I can't hand freshly signed papers to people and I refuse to lend my pen, even for a signature.
I'll grab a ballpoint for multipart forms or a mechanical pencil for random scribbling (or crosswords ). It helps to be right-handed, too.
I've just never found a rollerball that glides over the paper like a good fountain pen.
