Congratulations for taking on this challenge. You're well on the way just by making the admission you did, by determining your goal and starting the program.

If you can find someone else training for the same event (or talk someone serious into it) it will help motivate you.

I was a couch potato at age 38 and started running because I was was coaxed by my wife to run around the block (hilly area) and couldn't keep up with her or even keep running. 11 months later I ran my first of 15 marathons over 7 years with my last one being my fastest. I qualified for Boston after 7 marathons and ran it 3 times. Injury has prevented me from running seriously anymore however I remain active and very fit at age 49. It has changed my life tremendously.
