I had a shop take a look at it, and they recommended I flush the rear differential fluid. So I had that done today, and they said they found large chunks of metal in there, and flushed it twice. They also flushed the transfer case fluid and again found chunks of metal. They are saying my transfer case is going bad and I will probably need to replace it. I have had my car for less than a month, and it's at about 71,500 miles.

I am looking at $1,025 for a used transfer case and another $300 for labor. Has anyone had any similar issues with their cars? Anyone know anything about Lemon Laws for used cars?

No I chose not to add it on, the extended warranty was from a 3rd party agency, and I researched them online. There were a lot of horror stories so I just purchased as-is.

 

AS IS is AS IS. You were offered an ext warranty and refused. They did their part.

Lemon laws only cover the first 12-18k depending on state and only apply to new buyers. Used at best have a 3 day remorse possibility.

Experience in doing hundreds of prebuy inspections on out of warranty vehicles indicate that almost everyone is sold with $3,000 or more of needed work, even a 5 year old one.

Failure to change lubricants frequently is a common cause.

I would have the transmission ATF exchanged if you don't want a $5500 problem in the next few years.

Then you get a 65% discount on buying a used car [71k], you must reserve some of the savings for repairs.

 

Yea I realize I'm pretty much **** out of luck as far as getting any compensation from the dealer.

Back to the transfer case, I found one with ~20k miles for $500 shipped. Do I need to replace just the rear, or do I need to replace both? Also any good import shops up here in West Lafayette, Indiana? The nearest Infiniti dealership is an hour away in Indianapolis.

Also, why would my rear transfer case be binding like that? Are there other underlying issues I need to check for?

 

^ the transfer case is for transferring power from the transmission to the front axle. you do not have a transfer case for the rear axle, only the front.

the rear axle receives power via the differential from the driveshaft which is connected to the transmission. this is a linear connection that does not require a 180-degree "turn".

 

Ok well I'm taking it in to the Infiniti dealership next Tuesday to see exactly how deep of a ****hole I'm in. They won't give me a loaner because I'm under 21 though.

 

So I got everything fixed on my transfer case. $510 for the transfer case, $204 for labor. Also had my transmission fluid flushed/changed while I was at it. So this month's modding money is pretty much down the drain...

 

Any update on how the repair is holding up? I am in the same exact position. Just bought my G35x about 2 weeks ago. Took it for an oil change and they found a major leak in my transfer case, then took it to a specialty mechanic and he confirmed it. I need a whole new one.

Found one in Cali for 685 shipped. If anyone knows anywhere I can look online, I could use the help.

 

Hey, I just bought my 2005 G35x and brought it to the dealership, after a binding, clunking, jumping noise when I made low speed sharp turns, and they told me I needed one too. I live in Canada so it's going to be a little harder to find a used one... how did you find your used one?

 

In some states dealers are required to provide a 30 day warranty.

 

I got really lucky with my transfer case issue. I was just about to drop 7 bills on a new one but my mechanic had one last thought. Turns out the bearing inside the t case was deteriorating. He ordered me a new one and sealed up the few leaks I had and its been good as new. Only cost me 200 including labor.
