Yeah you really made some bad decisions there. Nice guys finish last, isn't that what they say? As far as lending money to friends, the only people that ask their friends for money are the ones that are incapable or don't have the integrity to pay it back. This applies 99.9% of the time.

The best approach I've found it to tell them I will help you out once, and I don't expect you to pay me back, but never ask me for money again.
