Car is draining battery, help!!!

I am at the dealer now. My 2004 G35 had to jump start the car twice yesterday so I thought the battery has gone bad. Had the battery replaced last night, everything was fine. This morning the battery was dead and had to jump start again. I think something is causing the drain. Dealer just told me they think it's the starter, I told him no because it jump start fine and the starter is cranking fine. I told the tech to look for the drain rather than the starter. Anyone had this problem before or know what's causing the drain? Please help! Thanks

maybe the alternator is not working properly so the battery is not being recharged?

I'm putting money on the headunit if you still have the stock one.

Its a known issue. You should still go to Checker/Autozone and test your alternator though. Free/easy peace of mind.

Wait until Ashley sees this post.

Op it's more than likely your head unit. ^^ will tell you his tale of woe trying to find out what was causing the issue and how he fixed it.

Many thanks for your input. Did a search in this forum and other forums, I pulled the radio fuse last night and the battery is fine this morning. Now I need to replace the Bose unit. Anyone know a good shop in Central/ North Jersey?

^Just don't replace it with another stock unit. It'll only break again.

Battery drain issue resolved

I saw a thread in Automotive.com and all kinds of owners with 03, 04, 05 even 06 have the Bose issue. The problem is a diode in the radio unit got fried and on/off is not working so it's aways on including the amp. The solutions are:

1) Take it to dealer (the stealers all knew about this issue) along with this printout to back you up. Ask the dealer to send the Bose unit for repair and it should cost $100 to $200 tops for the whole repair. They just simply replace the fried diode which cost only a few dollars. It would take 7-10 days for the unit to come back.

2) Go to Best Buy and get a new radio/cd installed along with a kit so the steering control would work. Cost $200 to $400 depending on the make. There is nothing wrong with any other parts in the audio system! So just get the radio/cd unit.

Solution 2) is the best way so you don't have to fight with the stealers and replaced unit may or may not fry in a few years.

I did a thorough search in this forum and there are a lot guesses and false solutions. This the best solutions I have found and explanation that came with it in automotives.com

Moderator: it would be helpful to many in this forum to make this a sticky.

PS This problem is more prevalent with 03 and 04 for now due to the age of the cars. It would affect the 05, 06 cars too. Best way to prevent it is to shut off A/C and radio before the ignition. Because when you start the car, there is a huge surge of 600v which is the main cause that fried the diode.

Only problem with solution 2 is that Best Buy is going to use the Metra kit. For 03/04 that means possible poor-matching finish, and ugly buttons that don't light up at night.

Good suggestion on having a sticky... might be better though to add it to the FAQ master thread. I did a quick scan of it and surprisingly didn't find anything on this issue.

edit... my bad, I didn't realize that was in the premiere only section. I'll make the suggestion for you.
