"best" settings for JL 500/1 amp

Hey Everyone,

My friend and I just installed a JL 10W6V2 sub in my car last Friday. It sounds good, but for some reason, it just doesn't seem like I'm getting the most out of this sub. It hits really smooth, but just not enough "oomph" if you know what I mean? I know alot of people on this board have this setup, so can anyone tell me what the "optimal" settings I should have on my JL 500/1 amp to produce the best overall sound? Thanks guys.

set your gains accordingly. if the bass doesn't hit as hard as you want it to, then you might want something a little more powerful

Based on the specs of that JL500/1 and that sub you shouldn't have a problem driving the sub to it's full potential. I think a lot of people use just the 300/1 and are fine but the 500/1 should be more than enough. I know it takes a while for some subs to really break in but the other problem could be power. What size power cable are you running and do you have a decent battry? Unfortunately I do not have my setup yet but that's what I plan on going with so we'll see what kind of answer you get here. Anybody got any ideas??

I have 4 AWG wires running from my car battery to the amp, so I shouldn't see a problem there. Maybe I'm just being too picky because I used to have 2 12" Kicker's in my old Maxima .

im no audio pro, but messing with the gain should boost up that amp.. I have the 500/1 with JL 10W6V2 (inside 4080 box) and mine rocks pretty good.. takes your breathe away. I like it! I notice you're in SoCal.. where about?? I can let you listen to mine and see if that's the right amount of boom you wanted, or if you even want more. but this setup is good enough for me..

oh yeah, Sound Advice in Mission Viejo performed my install and they did a great job! very accomodating and proffessional!

Im running my setup on a stock battery, so the power should be enough. Now if you were going with two 500/1 or a 1000/1 or some other variations, then you will need more power.. but with your current setup, your stock battery should suffice.

lemme know..

It could also be your audio source. If the HU volts are low you will not be getting maximum use out of the amp. Are you running with the stock HU? If so hows your high/low converter? Might want to look into a line driver or an EQ, Audio Control makes some decent ones.

What kind of Kicker's did you have in your Maxima? I had four 15" L7's in my Tahoe and I loved every inch of those things. If your going for pure thumb, I def. recommend Kicker.

Good luck w/ fine tuning your system.

Hey Ipon,

I don't know where to "mess" with the gain per se. I'm definitely no audio expert as well. Anyhow, I currently live in Cerritos but used to live in Irvine (Graduated from UCI a year ago). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks again.

setting the gains too high could damage the speaker(s)

On JL amps, there is a voltage input (low/high). This is crucial as you must enter the correct one. I belive the cut off for what is considered low/high is 4 volts.

Ipon, any luck yet with this? Did the voltage input that sfgr415 mentioned above help? Curious because again seems like that 500 should push that easily. Let us know.

If you were to go with 2 12w7's, you would have to get one more 1000/1 amplifier.
