Swapping 03 G for 07 x worth it?
Hello all,
Just trying to get your thoughts and advice. I have a 2003.5 (no doggie door) G35 Premium with 147,000 miles that I bought 9 years ago. I have been having some issues with the car overheating and I should know what the issue is later today. I also need new front compression bushings.
While I was at the dealer today I saw a 2007 G35x Premium with only 53,0000. Bought and serviced locally at the dealer. They are asking $18,500. My best guess is it is worth abut $17k only because of low miles and assured maintenance.
KKB says trade-in of $4k for mine. Black Book says $2,250-$3,750. Add in that it needs some work and my guess is that I would be lucky to get $3500 for it in trade. Lucky.
So if I could get out the door at $14,500 or $15,000 cash including fees and taxes would that be a good deal?
More reliable, Gen 2 car, and X which is good here. And it is in great shape.
Still seems like a lot for the upgrade but not much I can do about the condition of my trade.

I think you can push for a better trade in offer from the dealership. I think you should be able to get $3500 from carmax. The dealership should offer you more since you are staying loyal to the brand and they are making money on the sale. I would hold out for a week and see what they come back with. I bet this Monday on March 31st. Last day of the month they might be willing to give you $4000-$4250 trade in along with a better purchase price.

Well I don't really care if they call it trade in ir a price reduction. I need to get out at $14,500 -$15,000 max including tax and their $200 in fees. So I was thinking about an offer of $14,500 total out the door and let them figure out how to distribute it. With $1,180 in tax/fees that lowers the price by $1680.
And you are right they might take that at the end of the month.

Tell them you need the OTD price at no more than $14,500. I guarantee they'll figure out how to do it. They'll at least get it to $14,700. Which you're fine with, but they don't know that. By being stern and saying you absolutely can't go over $14,500, they'll be forced to negotiate. Only thing you'll have to do at that point is not be afraid to walk away. If the deal just isn't there, walk away. They won't let you walk away (unless of course you're just being ridiculous). They won't lose a sale over a few hundred bucks. The sale is the important part.

Walk away. Tell them you're sorry, but that's just a bit out of your range and if they're willing to work with you, you'd love to buy the car. Shake his hand and walk away. A good attitude goes a long way too; be nice and don't seem needy. I'm sure they'll stop you on yer way out. Do you know how long the car has been on the lot?

I think it has been there for a few weeks. But it is very very clean. I'm sure someone will pay for it.
The dealership is under heavy construction and the showroom floor and the parking lot out front is closed The door into the place is only open on the side. I am guessing sales may be lower than usual this month and we are right at the end of the month.
If they want a deal I will come out ok. If they don't feel any pressure to sell it in the next 2 days then I will probably be SOL.

Well, my hunch was right - the 31st and having the dealer under heavy construction led to them taking an offer from me. I dropped by to get my car out of service with a $500+ bill. Stopped by sales to reiterate the offer I made that was rejected on Friday. We were about $1200 apart. Funny, this afternoon they took it. Well, I had to come up $65. Oh, and they ate my service bill
So I have a new (to me) car! I'm excited.
