Door Scratch, paint touch up
So I was parked outside a library after I finished washing my car and i come back to find a huge scratch on the side of the passenger door. It was a door ding that just left a huge scratch. I was so angered but I guess it's not worth it to make a big deal. But what I want to know is how to cover up the scratch. I read things about the dealer paint pens but are they effective?
What are some other options? Thanks!

I'll be sure to take a couple pictures tomorrow. It's not too deep, but there was some green paint on it from the other car and of course it's just a white scratch now.

Here are some pics of the scratch. I went out today and purchased some touch-up paint from Infiniti and I haven't used it yet. Just wondering what everyone thinks about the touch-up paint pens.
How do I apply the paint? ![]() ![]() ![]()

From what I see. It seems like at the very least there is some paint transfer. You can try buffing the paint that transfered by hand using a microfiber or a polishing pad.
In terms of your paint appilation, I never use paint touch up pens. I usually get aerosol cans for larger jobs or small paint cans from Napa or local body shops. Get them to match the paint. Actually you know what? Picus has a great tutorial on touching up inclusive on wetsanding etc. etc. He provides step by step info. Cheers, Nick

it doesn't look like it's down to the primer, it looks like paint transfer like^^ said, use scratch X. I had a similar mark on my rear quarter panel once and it was removed by rubbing

Remember to use a very mild polish. A finishing polish like Merzerna Micro Polish with the microfiber or polishing pad.

So i used the ScratchX and I removed most of the scratch but it was still there. My next thought way to fill in the paint with the infiniti car paint that i got. Now it looks terrible. I went out and bought a can of Dupli-Color clear top coat and sprayed it over that. But I then stopped.
Is it took later to do the how-to by picus on wetsanding and chip repair? This is frustrating.

So this is where I am at right now. I'm really worried i might have done something that damaged the clear coat.
As you know I sprayed on some of the dupli color clear coat over the scratch and it had a build up on it, which wasn't smooth. I did the Picus wetsanding thing and this is where I am at right now. It still has a weird haze and it's not glassy reflect. It's kinda dull. Here are some pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I did not make a template for the spray on clearcoat. I just used the aerosol can and dusted the area.

Sorry deleted my message. I mistyped what I was trying to ask. In any case, as per the DIY instructions templates are neccesary when using an aerosol can. Just for future reference. It's very hard to control the spray action from an aerosol.
Did you sand the area that you sprayed with clear coat? It looks like you took sandpaper to a large chunk of the panel far beyond the "scratch" area.

I did sand the area that I sprayed with the clear coat, which was more than the scratch.

Ok so just describe your process to me. Did you use 2000 grit then 4000 grit sand paper?
Cheers, Nick
