Dynoing out the myth of intake mods

DYNO TEST POSTPONED TO OCTOBER 30th at 12:00

Hey guys, I'm starting up a project. I'm tired of the lack of independent data associated with intake mods and am going to test as many different intake mods as I can get my hands on, in one concurrent session in order to keep the variables to a minimum.

I've always been fascinated in NA power since its so hard to attain on our cars. everything has to be working perfectly in sync in order to maximize output. I plan on doing a NA build eventually (I have the motor in pieces, 11:1 CR Weisco pistons, and its just waiting for time and money I don't have right now)

As I mentioned, I'm trying to remove all variables. This includes any bottlenecks in the stock motor that may cause the benefits of an intake to be masked.

My car right now: 06 G35 5AT with 44,XXX miles
- Z-Tube
- Ported and Poished Plenum Assembly down to the runners work thread
- Polished Throttle body scroll down for pics
- Thermal gaskets to lower plenum temps
- Coolant Bypass mod work thread
- Strup coated headers work thread
- Altered Atmosphere HiFlow Cats ** will be replaced with ART pipes **
- Bassani true dual exhaust with x-pipe
- Uprev Osiris

With this configuration, I believe I will be able to realize any gains to be had from the intake mods I test.

Here is what I had in mind for testing:
1 - 5/8 Spacer
2 - Stock air box with K&N Panel filter
3 - 06 revup airbox with K&N Panel filter (the one with the large velocity stack)
4 - JWT Pop Charger
5 - ??? what do you want to see ???

I plan on doing sound recordings for each setup in addition to data logging each of the runs to pull a/f ratios and other engine stats. And I will post dyno print outs of each one to tie it all together.

learned fuel settings will be cleared between each part (ecu reset,) the car will be strapped in the whole time, dynos will be back to back. I will start with the lower plenums, then spacers, and finish with intakes. which ever plenum and spacer make the most power will stay on for the intake testing. The car will start out with the stock air box and K&N panel paired with my ported and polished plenum as a baseline.

as per weapon-r:
I will be reseting the ECU by disconnecting the battery, not just clearing fuel settings.
I will give the intake a small learning period before the runs
I will give the engine a small cooldown period before the runs

"'duelper4mance' can get me on an AWD Mustang dyno for a $25 strap fee plus $15 per pull, or $85 an hour, whichever is cheaper."

I've already got:
- Motordyne ART Pipes (TrixR4kidz)
- Motordyne MRev2 Lower (duelper4mance)
- 5/16 Spacer (T3K_V35, duelper4mance)
- 5/8 Spacer
- K&N Panel
- JWT Pop charger
- The stock airbox
- 06 rev up box (T3K_V35)
- Stillen Intake (gmotion04)
- FuRookie SRI (martyg35) thread
- Tekada (platelock, older version)
- Tekada (AFE - new version, uses stock box)
- Weapon-R (not sure exactly what they are sending me)
- Top Speed intake (waijai and Aaron from topspeed)

I might get:
- New Prototype intake (SxExCx)

I'm still in need of:
- whatever else you think needs testing
- donations for to help cover dyno fee

I've Emailed the following companies asking to dyno their intake:
R2C - http://www.r2cperformance.com/ - responded, not likely
Fujita - http://www.f5air.com/ - no response yet
AEM - http://www.aemintakes.com/ - no response yet

I got $$ showing not much gains comparing stock setup to a popcharger or CAI..

This is BALLER Rob -

would also like to see the gains from regular G35 intake compared to 350z stock intake (really just the tube swap)
How much are the dyno's man

Glad to see you are motivated. I do not beleive it is really worth it. You are talking 1-5 hp differences between products. Plus all cars respond slightly different anyways. You may gain 5 hp from a mod, where someone else might gaint 1 hp. Plus you can even dyno the same car with same mods twice, and get different numbers. The effects are too small and testing too inacurate to really give a definitive answer.

Also mod combinations react differently as well. If you find one intake works best, it does not mean that is true for someone else that doesnt have the exact same mods as you. Take the SSV manifold for example. I saw a boosted member post a dyno gain of 32 hp when he installed it. Also another mostly stock member reports a dyno loss of 2 hp when he installed it.

Plus you would have to do all the different variations on the dyno without removing the car, have the coolant temperature the same for every run, reset the ecu inbetween and pray the ambient temperature doesnt change during the whole project... all on a completley stock car.

If you average 125 dollars per set of 3 pulls, you honestly are going to be spending upwards of 800 dollars, plus shop labor to swap out parts inbetween.

well thats the thing, I'm hoping I can get a discounted rate for leaving the car strapped in and just change out the parts myself. intake work is so simple, just need a 8mm for those worm drives, and the 10mm for plenum bolts. would take less than 10 minutes to swap each one.

each mod will have the learned fuel settings cleared (through uprev cipher) and it will be given 3 pulls. I can monitor coolant temp so thats not a big deal.

Still, this may benefit you. But it does nothing for anyone else unless they have the exact same mods, tune and motor.

One issue with dynoing with the stock set up is the air scoop on the center of radiator support generally does not get air fed to it when on a dyno but all you need us a fan there as well.

I'm sure you wont see big gains on a stock car, I'm not trying to prove that.

I'm trying to see what each intake will do when it's isolated, on a car that needs a good intake setup.

I feel like this will do something for everyone, if a part dynos bad on my car I think it can be said that it's not particularly good for anyone, and inversely if it does good, there is more probability that it will do good on other VQ's

there will be a BIG blower (fan) in font of the car.

I think that you will see the most variation in power AFTER 6300 rpms to redline, in cars that can rev that high. I'd bump up your redline for even more data points, inferences, etc.

Could also try the setups with a Samco induction hose.

Your headlights are money, too.

that would be great! like I said this is completely unbiased, I know people are looking for honest reviews and I'm not trying to skew anything. I'm not sponsored by anyone, just looking for what gives me the most power.

I'm sure if a manufacturer is confident in their intake, they will want me to post dyno's so they can get more sales.
