Transmission replacement. Which model to I get?

Transmission replacement. Which model to I get?
OK so my transmission went out in my 2003 G35 coupe AT. I've had it checked out by the dealership and2 privately owned shops. I wanted to be 100% about what was wrong. I was told I need a new tranny from all 3. Basically mine is just falling apart inside. The integrity has been compromised over time and it is past the point of worth being repaired. The dealer wanted $5000 to do the entire job, the privately owned shop wanted $3100.
I am wanting to save a little change and spend only about $600-800 (give or take) on a used transmission and I have a friend with a shop that will install it for $500. This way I will save some money and this is the best route for me. Now. I have looked for transmissions online but it seems there are several different "models" for a single year model car 11/02...and other numbers a like. I have my VIN on hand, how can I find out the correct transmission assembly for my car and does anyone have any recommendations on a reputable site to order a used/refurbished tranny or would a junk yard be a better route?
Any and all advice/tips on how to go about acquiring and legitimate replacement tranny. I'm really trying to not get screwed over by purchasing used "crap". A reputable source would be great. Thanks in advance!

Update: I was told by the dealership that my cars production date is May of 2003. I called used transmission site and the guy informed me that I would need the AT 11/02 tranny. He said the later model for that year. He quoted me $800 or so for a tranny with 73k miles on it and a 1 year warranty. Free shipping. I'd still like to hear some advice from you guys.
