How do you remove broken bolt?

I was bolting my engine cover back down and over tightened the 10mm back bolt near the MAF. It broke off flush with the top of the plenum. Does anyone know how to remove the piece of bolt that is stuck in the plenum?

Thanks

If it's flush, then you'll have to drill it & use an easy out.
The drill should be smaller than the bolt so as to not damage the threads.
The easy out has a reverse thread that as you tighten will remove the broken bolt.
Easy outs are available from most tool suppliers.

Just noticed you said flush with top of plemun.

If you remove the plenum you can remove the broken bolt with pliers.

Make sure you remove the plemum bolts in the proper sequence.
Check the Motordyne site for info

On page 6 of the Motordyne instructions, it is broken off flush in the socket between #9 and #15. So in that spot the bolt sould be protruding from the underneath of the plenum? I installed the Motordyne spacer and everything went well until I installed the engine cover. If I need to drill it out, would any type of drill bit work as long as it's smaller than the bolt diameter? I'm always nervous as hell putting bolts back into Aluminum!

As stated previously, get an EZ Out bit set. Works like a charm. Most places that have a good selection of tools will carry them.

I broke a bolt in my lower plenum when I was installing a plenum spacer and I freaked out! I agree with using an easy-out or drill-out bit is correct. This happened to me about a month ago. I went out to Sears and bought the Craftsman Drill-out (micro) set. Went back home and as soon as the drill-bit touched the broken bolt, it took less than 3 seconds for it to come out.

Here's a link to the post I made (with pics) for help, maybe there's more info for you here...

HELP!!! Bolt broke inside lower plenum when I was installing spacer! *pics*

Good Luck!

I had the same problem breaking one bolt flush with plenum on the final cover install after doing the plenum spacer. I haven't taken it out yet.

Just do as the others say, if you can't grab it with vice grips after removing the plenum. Go to your local tool supplier and get an EZ out the proper size to remove your broken bolt. On most EZ-outs it will tell you what drill size to use for that particular easy out. Just take your time and make sure the easy out is smaller than your broken bolt and carefully drill down the center of the bolt. Then screw in the easy out counter-clockwise into the hole and it will tighten up and then keep turning counter-clockwise and hopefully your broken stud will come out with it.
Here is a pic of an ez-out.

cut a slit on top using a dremel and use a flat head screw driver to unscrew it out.

Samething happened to me, when replacing the engine cover after installing Gords HyperGround Kit. I lucky to be able to use pliers to get it out. Where did you guys get replacement bolts? I had to order mine from Infiniti.
