Kitchen Knife Set

So my parents anniversary is coming up in about a month and since they both love to cook, I want to get them a really nice knife set. I'm looking for an 8-12 piece set for $200-$300... Any suggestions?

I haven't gotten my new set yet, but have narrowed it down to either Henckle International Classics or Wusthof Classics. I am just waiting to grab a set for a decent price.

HA! I would have those in my kitchen! But in seriousness if you haven't found a set you like yet, you can try Cutco. I have a full set of these and love them. Lifetime Warranty as well. http://www.cutco.com/home.jsp

I used to sell Cutco Knives they are ok. All higher end knives have lifetime warranties. $200-300 will buy you Ok knives but not great especially if you want 10-12. Some knives sell for $100 each which is worth it because they basically last forever just keep them sharpened. I would suggest getting a couple of those 20% off coupons at Bed Bath and buying the essential knives usally they throw in a free knife block if you spend over $100. Because most of those sets give you 6 steak knives so you only get 4-6 real knives.

Here is a list of what I bought

Henckel's Professional S (not the best but good)

3" Parer Knife $29.99
6" Ultility Knife $64.99
6" Chef's Knife $69.99
8" Chef's Knife $89.99
7" Santoku Knife $79.99
8" Carver/Slicer and 6" Meat Fork $89.99
10" Sharpener $29.99

Steak knives I bought seperate these are good for the price.
Henckel's Eversharp 8 piece $29.99

Total was around $400 with the 20% discounts

There are bread knives which I think is a waste so I didnt buy one. A filet knife and boning knife are good also but I do not eat much whole fish so I didnt purchase one.

I have the same make and model of knives except I included the bread knife which works terrific and I went with the Henckel Twin Steak knife set.

If your budget is only $300, get a smaller set (5-7 knives) of higher quality knives. Get forged Henckels or Wusthof (my preference) and only get their lines made in Germany (as opposed to other places, aka International).

Why a smaller set? Because realistically, you only need 3-4 knives to do most of your cutting duties. If you really want steak knives, get a set for them next year.

Why higher quality? Because they will last FOREVER, so why not spend a little more now. Higher quality knives also retain their edges longer and make slicing easier, quicker, and safer (yes, sharper is safer).

Go with cutco man.

Before I bought them I was told that this are the best knives ever and they never go bold and blah blah blah blah. I did not quite believe that but bought them anyway (my sister was selling them at that time so I got a little discount)

So I used this knifes for over 5 years now.

And recently I added couple knifes to my kitchen knife collection.

Nothing fancy some German knives.

And I was cutting mushrooms the other day and I decided to compare my 5 year old cutco knife to this brand new knife.

I almost crapped my pants. You could not even tell that cutco knife was used for 5 years. It would cut mushrooms better then this brand new knife.

I was pleasantly shocked.
