Installed Surveillance on the crib-PICS

A few weeks back the house got egged (we suspect the neighbors kids, long story). We park the G's inside the garage, but if they were outside, i'm sure they would have caught some eggs. So I figured it was time to juice in the video surveillance. Picked up an SVAT 4 camera system with IR nightvision and 160g DVR.

http://www.amazon.com/SVAT-CV0204DVR...717257&sr=8-12

1st one I got had a bad HD/DVR so it had to be exchanged. Overall the system is pretty decent for $600. I ran all the camera wires through the attic, into a cabinet in the garage and mounted the cameras under the soffit.
Connected the dvr to a super-duper old school commodore 64 monitor I had laying around. The kicker is the entire system is Internet accessable, when you hook up the DVR to Internet access. So I can view, record and manipulate everything on the system from a computer with Internet access.

The usable camera range is around 40 ft during the day and about 25 ft at night with some outside lighting. If anyone is thinking about doing something like this or has a security issue, I highly recommend it...especially if you can get into an attic to run the wiring. With only 4 cameras I can monitor the driveway, street, front yard, front door and both front/side areas of the house, and an empty lot next door. If I had to do it over again, I would prob up the budget to around $1000 for a better/upgradeable HD DVR with even more features, but the SVAT system is not bad for only a $600 price tag.

i'd love to get something like this, but it will be a while since b/c of the cost. We'll need it to be wireless, have a 'night vision' in it and view a much farther range.

Looks cool. There are some goth kids from another neighborhood who F'd w/ my inflatable "frosty" and tried to move my garbage can. (my crazy next door neighbor yelled at them for playing with my garbage can...they flipped her off...haha, not sure why)
Anyway, I just got a motion detector that beeps in the house. 6'4" and 260 pounds of me running at them is enough to make it stop.
(I patiently wait)

I use a system from wilife (http://www.wilife.com/) who was recently purchased by Logitech.

It is a pretty good system - The starter kit includes the software and one camera and costs $250. Additional cameras are about $200. The system can handle up to six cameras and must be connected to a computer.

They have Indoor, Outdoor, and Spy cameras (embedded in clocks, etc).

I have two cameras, both Indoor models attached with suction cups looking outside.

It is a great system for having about $400 invested.

I already caught one neighborhood thief - broke into a neighbor's car and peeked through the windows of both of my cars.

I like how those suction window cameras don't look like cameras at all. Pretty slick...got any pics of your set up?

It's amazing what you will catch with this stuff. I got some crazy lady walking / dancing around the street in front of my house for 20 minutes....got it all on vid. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before a neighbor's car window gets smashed in and they come cryin' to me.

Those systems are awesome, the cameras help out a lot for protection, especially if you have GOOD cameras. My father does this for a living, he has his own company, the works. The system he has at his house is CRAZY! He has 16 cams 8 of them hi def. and all with NV. The DVR is windows based and records up to 2 weeks with 3 160Gig HD's. Yeah its crazy, and its not a bad neighborhood, its just he wants to see EVERYTHING.
Thats a nice system though, something on the likes of what i would put on my house. Nice work!

I've been wanting to do this, but nothing extreme. How about a wireless setup?

This looks like a cool wireless camera with night vision:

closeoutcctv.com is where I got mine. Good system for a good price. Also have remote access through the internet for online surveillance.
