Narrowing my business major down

I'm about ready to transfer into a 4 year school with plans to major in business.. I've been looking at different business majors, and the ones that have caught my eye was financial advisor, marketing, and advertisement. Now, I'm hoping someone from here is one of these 3 and hoping there is one of each to maybe help guide me. I'm going to a transfer counselor to help me but I'd like to hear it from people doing the job first hand.

Recommendations? What classes do you need to be good at? (I.E. Math, etc etc) Pros/Con?

Thanks..

you may want to consider international business if that program is offered at your university

I am majoring in finance. I plan on going into wealth management with wachovia securities or merrill...a lot of money in that field. I think you only have to have stats 1 and 2 and calc 1

I majored in finance, did a internship at northwestern mutual and realized that it wasn't for me. I now work for a broker dealer trading equities, mutual funds and ETF's.
Financial planning just wasn't for me. I didn't like the sales side of it.

Marketing - you don't really need to be good at math
Finance/accounting - you have to be good at math. I didn't take that many "math" classes though, just college algebra, stats 1 and 2 and calc 1. But every finance class is math and equations so they are all math classes

You do that now, but you don't like finance...? Finance is trading equities, mutual funds, bonds, commodities, and ETFs.

Where did I say I don't like finance? I know what finance is, lol.

I meant it as saying that I didn't like working at an insurance company. I didn't want to be a financial adviser/financial planner. I'm only 24, working the trading desk for a while while I finish my series 24 and my CFA. I'm working on my CFA to become a mutual fund manager in the near future.

To the OP: If you do decide to become a finance major, be prepared for a lot of accounting classes. You will have to take 12-18 hrs of account classes.

What a thread! I am kind of in the same shoe as you. I am about to transfer out of a community college and I've been looking for different types of business field. I thought about business administration, then I change to financial. Finally, I was set as economics-management science. Offered in UCSD. Anyone here thats also a business management major? It'd be good to get some info about it before I go in couple months. Any comments will be greatly appreciated!

I graduated with a BBA in Finance. Honestly, I think that this is the most versatile of the business majors (but my bias is probably rather strong of course).

Just because you major in finance does NOT mean you have to become a broker or trade equities. I know a TON of finance majors who work as consultants, do corporate finance work, work as internal analysts or cost accountants, etc. I personally don't trade either. My job is still very much finance related, but it has nothing to do with securities.

All in all, I would say that the most important thing is to get the college work done and then figure out what kind of job you want. 99% of the time, companies wont really care what your specific major is (or you might take a job that doesn't exactly match your education). In the end, it's all about having that diploma. But that's just my 0.02.

Accounting or No Care! Get your CPA, make Bank Retire by 40. You'll also be bald from the stress, but you'll be a rich bald mofo.

Actually in Marketing there is more math then you would think. I Majored in that and I had to take two algebra classes, two stats classes and 2 accounting classes. Still nothing compared to taking finance. I would suggest taking finance though if you can handle the math. But it all comes down to what your main interest is. Plus if you want to work at a bank, taking finance is the best option.

I'm a marketing major I've had to take plenty of Math/Accounting/Finance courses. Just recently I've takend Advanced Managerial Finance and Marketing Strategy, both "tough" classes but the math is obvious easily, only adding subtracting really. I changed my major from Business Management to Marketing simply because it was a more interesting route with only a few minor changes. I'm an Insurance Agent so either degree is acceptable in my field. Personally, I felt having an in depth background on Marketing/Advertising would benefit me more than straight management.

Im doing my MBA with finance focus. After a long debate with myself realized that finance is very versatile. You will know accounting as well which is helpful in any financial oriented job.

Something to think about:

When you look for marketing jobs.. .They usually mean some form of sales. I love advertising but its hard to get into. Finance will requites math, and prerequisites are usually some form of statistics or calculus even though finance itself is mostly simple calculations that algebra would satisfy.

When it comes to looking for jobs, keep in mind that most employers are looking for experiences and major second. They would take a communications major with few years of exp with finances over finance major straight out of school. So study what u are interested in most because in the long run it might not matter.

Lol...thats because finance itself is almost like taking more math classes. Anyways....if you can hack it I'd go finance. Marketing is a tough job market to break into IMO, if you want to get into a big firm at least. My specification was Marketing when I finished college, but if I had the chance to do it again, I'd make myself go through finance or accounting.

Yes...be very aware of this. There are many so called "firms" posting on job sites that are simply sales jobs. Some are even door to door sales jobs that don't pay you unless you sell something. They have cheesy names like "Marketing alliance" or "Marketing...blah blah blah," and their websites brag about working with Fortune 500 companies. They also have testimonies of employees how they love working there. Watch out...I fell for it once and went to the interview...they sent me out and I walked door to door with this guy and the test was dependent on how many questions I asked. That was my interview. When they offered me I was like...uhh no. Some people do well with it. Just like some people do will with pyramid schemes.

Anyways...ending that rant.
