26 years old man looking for an entry level watch under CAD $2K

Hello All,

Not until recently I have fallen in love with the craftmanship and history of watches and I am planning to get a new watch for myself before the end of this year.

While there are tons of tastefully made watches out there, I have to control my budget to strictly under CAD $2000 (including tax).

so i am just wondering what would you guys suggest for a 26 years old guy. (single if that matters...)

and please do not tell me to save up and buy one later...

here are what i am looking for....

- no used watches
- must be metal band
- for some reasons i do NOT like Seiko, so no Seiko here...
- automatic or quartz doesn't matter.
- preferably chronograph.. (i know this can be asking too much..)
- preferably swiss made
- it can be dressed up with a suit and shirts or dressed down so that i can also wear it on the weekend when i go out partying.. basically an all-purpose watch.

after some intial internet research, i think a Movado watch or a Gucci chrono would fall under my budget.. however, i would like to hear some experts' thoughts and opinions on these so-called "fashion watches" (obvoiusly i don't want to be laughed at by a watch collector when rocking on a fashion watch thinking that it's all nice and cool...)

also, since i am an absoutely begininer when it comes to watches...i'd highly appreciate if you can share your knowledge and reason why you'd recommend the watch to me...

any inputs are highly appreciated...

elau.. after 3 hours of browsing on this forum, i figure you are probably the the most knowledgeable "watch" guy on G35Drivers.. so please please share your valuable knowledge and thoughts with me..

thanks in advance.

Robin

not that anyone would be interested, but I now have an Amrani watch (model AR0546) which i boguht a year ago.. and man i can tell you that watch is a trully POS....

Just to give you an idea, I've listed mine below. All my watches can be worn to dinners, weddings, nice places, etc. All except the Tissot T Touch I had before I was 27. I'll be 28 in 3 weeks... Wife says no more watches for a few years, but I've got my eye on a Breitling

My first "nice" watch, was the Movado SE ($800)...

Then I purchased a Tag Heuer Aquaracer ($1300)

next came a present from the inlaws (Rolex Daytona, I know too much...)

and my last watch purchase was the new Tissot T Touch Titanium ($800). This is my everyday watch, works great, looks good, light...

Just got home, here's a crappy pic from my iphone. I don't wear the Rolex much at all, and I haven't purchased a wind box for it yet, thats why it's time is off...

thanks so much for your info NathanJax... it seems like watch price in US is a lot cheaper than here in Canada...i have seen the same Movado SE cost as much as CAD$1300 in downtown Toronto... ( i don't buy stuff online.. especially not watches considering that there are too many knockoffs out there...)

can anybody tell me how much a Tag Carrera and Formula 1 cost?.. they look soo beautiful...

Robin,
I am sorry to hear that you dislike Seiko. They actually make some really really nice watches, although they are above you stated budget. In the future, do take a look at the Grand Seiko and Spring Drive lines. They are equal to Swiss quality and craftsmanships.

For your budget, I would recommend you to check out Maurice Lacroix as they make some fanatics watches. Unfortunately, like most products, they are getting quite a bit of attention in recent years and their prices are going up. So you may want to grab one before the brand becomes unattainable at the below $2000 range.

Another brand I would recommend is Ball Engineering. They, again, under most people radar. They have the best luminous dial in the industry as they use nuclear materials. Yes, it is the only watch company approved by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to use such product in their watches. Their watches can be had at your budget.

As someone already stated, Hamilton should be another brand to consider.

I do not recommend Tag simply because I don't agree with the family's other business - arms sales.

For your budget, I would also recommend looking into some German brands. They make equally quality watches and some may say they are better than Swiss. Especially for you budget, you can purchase from this very reputable distributor on-line and they carry a wide variety of Germans. I actually met the two owners of the company. Good luck with your hunt!! Remember the rule of thumb, no matter what people recommend, at the end you are the one wearing the watch with your hard earned money. Buy what makes sense to you and buy wisely as the watch should fit your life style for years to come, unless, if you are a collector like myself which have watches for every occasion.

And keep us posted as to your purchase.

thanks for your quick reply elau.. i just took a quick look at Maurice Lacroix official website and man.. those are some baller watches.. i wonder if any of them would come below $2000.... (also note they like to mark up the price by at least 15% here in Canada..).

i do understand that Tag isn't one of your favaourite.. however. it's undeniable that they also make some nice quality watches... so my question is..

what do you think of their Aquaracer and Formula 1 series in terms of quality and craftmanship?? (disregarding the fact that their family do arm trades..).. are they good watches in the eyes of watch collectors or pure entry level craps made to suck up money from novice watch fans (like 323i in BMW..)??

how about Gucci chrono? is Gucci watch a purely fashion watch that holds no creditability whatsoever??

finally.... would you recommend an automatic watch or a quartz watch for a novice watch fan like myself?

thanks again for your advice!!

i recommend an omega reduced (speedmaster or seamaster), as long as it is automatic. i wear it and i like it. i think an omega is a good starter watch--has an interesting history and decently made. customer service/repair is not the greatest though.

the omega moon speedmaster would be better but it is also 3x as much.

You can always ask for a 15% to 20% discount to off set that. Never pay retail.

As you said.

Pure waste of money.

That's really up to you. I personally take a mechanical watch over a quartz any day. However, I do own a few quartz as well. Remember, high end quartz watches can make up as many moving parts as a mechanical, and so is the price. Those are usually not your mall brands like Tag or Gucci quartz which only have 5 or less moving parts.

You may want to check out Overstock.com and ShopNBC.com. I bought a nice Ebel 1911 automatic for $1200 recently that retailed for $2800. They usually have some Omega's, Ebels, Tags, Oris, etc.

Movado Luno
Steel band, black face (There are other options but they do not look as refined, the black museum dial is just classic)

http://www.movado.com/Details.aspx?I...=605556&page=2

I have no idea what they cost in Toronto but here they are reasonably priced but I can't remember what mine cost.

Looks classy and reserved with a suit, stylish with more casual clothes. Does not work with very casual and I look like an idiot wearing it with soccer shorts and a t-shirt but I feel naked without it on and have to wear it or I walk around thinking that I am forgetting something.

Additional feature:
If the person you are with can't tell what time it is then they are either too drunk or too stupid. It is amazing how few people can read an analog clock. I hear this time and again in the G, "where is the clock?" and I point to the clock that is sitting right in the middle of the dash. Then a minute later "what time is it?" I am 28 and people my age can't figure out what time it is by looking at the Movado, I can't imagine the look you would get from a recent high school graduate.

The very best part of a nice watch is the quality of the band and face and the extra care you will take to keep it in good shape. The combination of these will give you many years of enjoyment out of a nice watch. There are numerous times when I have rubbed up against something and sworn at myself thinking there would be a fresh scratch on the watch but then there isn't. After a good cleaning mine looks almost new.

Have you already purchased, if so please share with us what you decided to get?

hello guys.. thanks for all the info and tips..

I have already made up my mind to get a Tag Heuer Carrera Autoamtic Chronograph in metal band, black dial, and either red chrnograph hands (racing version) or the classic white hands.

OR

They are a bit over my initial budget plan... (asking price is USD$3200).. however.. i figure that since this will be my first watch. .i might as well get something that i love the most..

for now i am jsut comparing prices across different ADs and also thiinking hard on which one I should be getting..

personally.. I prefer the racing version more (in red) for now.. however, i am not sure if it'd suit me well still when i am 30+ (currently 26).

any thoughts???

thanks again!
