Still, I depend on my burglar alarm more than anything else as the deterent as most of what happens in my neighborhood is property crime (daytime breaking and entering) rather than a full blown home invasion. No firearms by my bed although I have a Randall #14 knife with a 7.5" blade that I keep nearby as well as a Surefire.

i keep a Springfield XD9 and Ruger P95 in my nightstand.... So yea, if i ever hear anything, i usually grab the XD and my Gf knows that if anything were to happen to grab the ruger.... Nothing has ever happened, and i live in a fairly safe place, but you never know. When i was in highschool, one of my buddies was robbed. They waited for him to come home, and tied him up in the closet, and as more family members came home, same thing, held them up at gun point, tied them up, and locked all of them in closets... If their aunt didn't live next door, and wondered why they weren't picking up the phone, they might have been left there for dead....

My wife has a Glock on her side, and I keep a sword on my side(I like to be quiet)

Would never use a light to let some know right were I was standing.

B.C. ("Before Children") it was my Remington 870 Vang Comp with Brenneke MP slugs.

Nowadays it's my Sig P239 9mm carry in a quick access safe on my side of the bed, and a Smith and Wesson lightweight .38 Special in a quick access safe on my wife's side of the bed.

I've been meaning to get a shotgun (I' under 21) for home defense, but I've been very busy and haven't had time to start browsing gun forums and see which one would be ideal for me. Any advice guys? Right now I keep my dad's P226 nearby, but I don't think that's adequate.

By the way, I live in an upscale community where Ferraris, porches, and million dollar homes are the norm, but we do have home invasions and burglaries. I am a liberal and a progressive, but I have a libertarian view when it comes to guns.
