So I decided to build a .22lr plinker. Cheap ammo = lots of fun!

Well not really a build, but I tore the gun down completely and upgraded all the internal bolts and modded a couple things. This so far, is thee funnest gun I own. With ammo becoming scarce and more expensive, I thought it would be fun to be able to shoot bulk packs at the indoor range and long distance at the outdoor range for less than .03 cents per round?

No, I'm not going into battle with it, but the fun factor is unbelievable.

GSG-5 ----->

Just thought I'd share... Post pics of your plinkers! (wait, that didn't sound right? LOL)

GSG-5's retail for $499 but you can find them cheaper if you look around. I saw a few for $450 at a gunshow. Definitely pricey for a .22, but every time I take it out to the range, It makes me realize it was worth it, haha.

all the mods can be found on RRages.com

its not automatic right? Im totally a gun n00b, but I'm in the market. few questions:

does this count as a real gun? meaning does it have to be registered, do you need a license?

whats the purpose of a "plinker"? Is it just a glorified bb gun?

does it operate like a real gun? or is it gas/batter powered?

thanks!!!

Yes, it's a real gun. It's considered a long rifle.

It is only semi-automatic, it's a clone of a H&k mp5. (However, you can rapid fire it as fast as you can pull the trigger, which is fun)

It shoots .22LR high velocity bullets. You can shoot someone from 200+ yards, so no it is not a BB gun.

I call it a plinker, because I only use it for target practice at the range, or shooting at cans, targets, metal plates, etc... Due to the low cost of .22LR ammo (you can buy a box of 550 bullets for $14-$20) which makes it a nice addition for cheap target practice.

I don't own it for self defense, I have bigger guns for that...It's just a fun lil gun I wanted to build. I can't afford a real mp5, so it was the next best thing, LOL.

If you want to learn more about the .22LR round and it's capability, see this thread below ---->

hmmm, you think it would make for a good home defense weapon??

personally, it looks like the most powerful rifle ive ever seen under 500, although i could be wrong.

Wow,
That's cheaper than a .22lr upper for my M4. I'm going to buy one for sure.

Thanks

no, I wouldn't use it for a home defense weapon. Granted I can rapid fire a very tight grouping due to the low recoil, but I would still rather use a shotgun for HD. Cheap & reliable.

ca$hio, if you find any good deals let me know. I'll probably buy it online and ask for a transfer, but i'll check out the local dicks sporting goods too.

I was thinking about picking up a GSG-5, they had it for like 525 at my local shop, but I couldn't justify spending that much when i already own a 10/22 for plinking... I was thinking about getting a 22lr pistol, but i don't know which one yet?

here's a pic of my 10/22 though:
