Speedometer Error

I think we all know that even from the factory, the speedometer can read +/- a few miles an hour. However, the other day I passed on of those police radar checkpoint thingys (the unmanned ones on the side of the road) three times and each time, the machine would read 5 to 7 mph slower than my speedometer.

Okay, I thought, maybe the police radar machine is off a bit. Then tonight, a friend and I drove home and I decided, wth, I'll call him on his cell phone to see how fast he's going (he was right in front of me). We both seemed to be going the same speed yet, once again my speedometer read at least 5 mph higher than I was actually traveling according to his speedometer.

I have stock 20" Goodyear RS-A's on and, imo, 5+ mph is a little much. Any other stock FX owners noticed this??? It isn't a huge deal but I'm curious if any one else has the same issue.

I believe some have reported issues with this. One of the org guys was tracking his speed with a gps and it was on the high side. Are you AWD? He was AWD as well, my tires sizes aren't always the correct overall height so I can't really count on mine to begin with.

Yep, I'm an AWD'er. It's one of the first times I've really noticed it. 5 mph can be the difference between a ticket and no ticket if you know what I mean. The good thing is that the speedo reads 5 mph to high instead of too low. I would be in trouble then.

heheh. It figures that you'd be the one to respond considering your FX is the farthest from stock I've seen to date. LOL!

Thanks for letting me know that it has been noticed before.

My Coupe is out slightly. It's low according to my GPS which shows 121 kph while the speedo indicates 119-120.

Heck I do wish mine was as accurate as yours Deane.
My 05 was right on but my 07 is out quite a bit.

I was surprised mine was low. I would have thought the speedo would be slightly high if not exact.

That's surprising the '07 is out that much. Does it have anything to do with the tire sizes on different models? Sounds close to what N50 is experiencing with the FX.

It was out that much with the 225/55/17 (stock size per X) and now I am running 245/45/18 (stock size per Sport) Both sizes are supposedly the same OD. I don't expect it to be perfect but I do expext it to be much closer than that. I do do realize that different tire manufacturers tire dimensions do vary somewhat even on same tire sizing.

When I went from the 17" to the 18 " tires on my 05 the speedo still remained accurate.

I just live with it, not a big problem for me. Still love these cars.

That's what is important. The speedo thing isn't a big deal since you know what you're dealing with anyhow. And guys over 45 always drive well under the limits anyhow speedo working or not.

Damn, I come back and I see that you and Wayne had your own little private convo...hahahaha

The weird thing is that I never really notice the speedo being that far off until just the other day, and I've had the car for three years now.

As private as it gets on a public board! Well, good to see you know it now.

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring with my 05 G sedan (stock 17's). The speedo is +7-8 km/h compared to my gps. It bugs me as I lease and often wonder how much the odo might be out. I keep meaning to do a test of it on a measured mile (there are a couple in my area that I know some taxi drivers use to check their odo's), just never seem to think of it when I'm near those spots.

Any of you suspect your odo to be flawed or do you think the errors are strictly with the speedo?
