Window Tinting question

I'm looking to get my windows tinted on my 03 G35 Coupe this weekend. The legal limit were I live is 35% which in my opinion isn't even dark. I was thinking of doing 15%-20% on the two side windows. Then I was thinking of doing 5% on the back window, and the two back triangle side windows. Also I was going to do the strip on the windshield 5%. Do you think 15-20% with the 5% on the back is going to be dark as in they cant really see in, because that is the look I'm going for. If you have any pictures of your car with tint please leave it below with the percentage. Thanks!

Anything darker than 35% can affect visibility at night especially when backing up.

I discussed this with a CHP officer not long ago, 35% may be the legal limit where you live but don't forget your windows come with 10% already! 3M makes some of the finest products on our planet...fact! They have a new window film that blocks our 97% of the heat/light and yet it comes in clear and several shades of color, you could do your front glass in clear and never have your interior fade When my new ride arrives, that w/b my first stop...Gary

Yup. This is often forgotten.

Most glass is pretty dirty, and if oyu look at the edge, you usually see a green tinge to it. For this reason, it usually rings up at 78-80% when you put a meter on naked glass.

Add 35% tint to it and (.35*.78=.28) you get around 28% VLT.

I have 35% film all around on my sedan, and it shows as 28% on the meter. At night, it does affect visibility as I find myself rolling down my side windows sometimes ot see on a dark country road.

I still like it though, and even though legal limit here is 35% all around, I haven't been bothered. (knock on wood)

You vandal ^

Any tint is preference IMO from the rear back. On the front window no more than 50% should be allowed you can't see out of it otherwise. Both times I was hit while being a pedestrian were related to window tint...

What color is your interior? If you have a black interior, the tint is gonna automatically look darker. If you have beige interior you can get away with a little more; especially with the sunroof open. Here is 20% sides, 5% rear/quarters.

You see a difference, but it looks fine. I've even been pulled over for no front license and he didn't ding me for the tint. It also looks totally black at certain angles and at night.

For instance

does the 20% ever get tough at night? & you need to stop posting pics of that IP, I get the urge to paint my car every time I see it

Absolutely not. I have never had a problem seeing out. It's really not that much different than no tint at all. The 5% I could see being a problem if you were backing out a lot at night, but the 20% is no problem at all.

ah okay, I want to get my tints redone soon as well, but maybe it's the color contrast between the white and black that makes it look so much darker

Definitely. That's also why you can go a little darker if you have a light interior. If a cop passes you and you have a light interior and open your sunroof..bam..you have enough light passing thru to keep you from looking like a drug dealer. Haha

All about contrast. You can always push it, but gotta be willing to take it off if you're ticketed. Then you gotta get it out back on. Haha

Ouch.

Friend of mine has a tinted windshield. 20-35% or so, I forget which.

I don't know how anyone sees out of them at night. Driving in a rainstorm down some pitchblack roads...there was no way you could see anything. He has to kill the interior lights and nobody can use a phone due to the brightness otherwise he can't see ****.

But he looks cool

OP, do 20% side windows and 5% back/triangle windows if you want it to be super dark.
I went with 20% all around and I'm more than happy. I have a backup camera for backing up at night. I also usually have the drivers side window down at night because it is really hard to see when taking a turn.

I have my back windows at 5% front windows at 12%. I don't have any good pictures of my car on me right now that will show the window tint better. During the day you are still able to see in my car, enough to see who is driving. Especially when light hits it straight on. During night, you are not able to see into the car, even up close. It can be a pain driving with dark windows but i also like the look. I'm thinking of putting 5% on my front windows too. Haven't gotten any tickets yet. Surprisingly since I'm in Cali.
