Windshield washer only works when parked

I have a 2006 G35 sedan. My windshield washers only work when I'm parked, not when I'm driving. Any ideas as to what's wrong?

Have you checked out the FSM?

http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/G35/Seda...5_Sedan/ww.pdf

With the ignition switch in the ON or START position, power is supplied

through ignition relay, located in IPDM E/R

to front wiper relay, located in IPDM E/R,

to front wiper high relay, located in IPDM E/R, and

to CPU located in IPDM E/R,

through 10 A fuse [No.1 located in fuse block (J/B)]

to BCM terminal 38,

through 10 A fuse (No.84 located in IPDM E/R)

through IPDM E/R terminal 44

to front washer pump terminal 2.
Ground is supplied

to BCM terminal 52

through grounds M30 and M66,

to IPDM E/R terminals 38 and 60

through grounds E17 and E43,

to combination switch terminal 12

through grounds M30 and M66.

WASHER OPERATION

When the wiper switch is in front wiper washer position, BCM detect front wiper washer signal by BCM wiper
switch reading function. (Refer to
WW-7, "
COMBINATION SWITCH READING FUNCTION
"
)
Combination switch ground is supplied

to front washer pump terminal 1

through combination switch terminal 11

through combination switch terminal 12

through grounds M30 and M66.

With ground is supplied, front washer pump is operated.
When the BCM detects that front washer pump has operated for 0.4 seconds or longer, BCM operates front
wiper motor for low speed.
When the BCM detects washer switch is OFF, low speed operation cycles approximately 2 times and stops.

Thanks for the link, telcoman, that document is very helpful. I don't really have the ability to troubleshoot the electronics, I was wondering if anyone had had the problem before and knew whether it was usually a problem with the pump or somewhere else in the system. I think I'll try draining the reservoir to see if there was any crud blocking the feed (although since it's a closed system I'm not sure how anything foreign could get in there). Next I could try replacing the pump as it looks like they're not that expensive. If neither of those work I'll probably take it to the dealer. But that document tells me where everything is so I can try DIY first. Thanks again!

If it works when parked but not while driving then the problem is electrical. If the pump was the problem it would not work at all. Same with the reservoir.

Aha, thanks telcoman. Gotta get it fixed, I'm driving in south Georgia a lot right now where you get lots of bug splats.

Whatever you do don't go to the dealer, we call them stealerships for a reason. Any competent local mechanic should be able to fix this.

I don't believe there are any.

What mechanic has access to Consult lll for proper diagnosis?

Better to spend a one hour labor diagnosis charge at the dealer than just start throwing new parts without knowing the root cause failure.

If you just keep replacing parts you might get lucky and eventually replace the correct one with lots of wasted time, money and aggravation.

The perjorative term "stealership" is used by some who think expensive qualified factory training and owning the proper tools should be given away for free.

You get what you pay for in this world.

If you can't afford proper diagnosis perhaps you should have purchased a cheaper vehicle?

Yeah I usually take it to the dealer. I haven't found a good independent mechanic nearby.
