Do the rear brakes last longer than the front?

That's what one of the mechanics said at a local shop here. In fact, he said that RWD cars usually have a 3:1 ratio of changing the front pads/rotors compared to the rears.

My brakes have been sqeaking and howling a whole lot. I had the fronts replaced as the rotors were clearly worn, but didn't do the rears and the squeaking and howling persists like crazy. I know that the G's are known to have noisy brakes, but the sqeaks and howls every time I come to a stop are ridiculous. I'm thinking of taking a look at the rear brakes....

The rear will normally last longer on all cars since the front brakes do 70-80% of the braking.

Yep your back pads should wear slower than your fronts

For regular driving, your front pads will wear faster than your rear pads, as most of your braking force is at the front. If you drive aggressively, your rear pads will wear faster also. Why is this? When launching or cornering hard, your rear wheels may slip and lose traction mometarily. This is when VDC and TCS kicks in and applies the brakes to the rear wheels to stop the slippage. So when you make your "Slip Light" on the dash go off, remember this.

I noticed I had to change both my front and rear pads at the same time at 49,000 km.

I've had the front pads changed 3 times, and the rear pads changed once.

On every car & motorcycle I've owned, the front brakes have always worn much faster than the rears.

yes, rear outlast the fronts... i think its 70% of stopping power comes from the front.

Just think about it. It makes sense that the front would do the majority of the stopping so they would wear faster.

The truth is............

Here's an example.......I had a '92 300ZXTT and replaced the factory brakes
at 118K miles. The front pads were 85% worn and the backs were 30% plus
I never had issues with dust or squeeks. Yes, it was a stick and I spent most
of my driving on the freeway but those were some great brakes! On a FWD
vehicle the front brakes alway go first unless of course there are issues with
the rears.
