My brakes were smoking?

Since Tuesday I've noticed my brakes had a wierd smell as I got out of my car, then today as I pulled off the freeway and up to a gas station I noticed a bunch of smoke coming from my front brake/tire area and it smelled like burnt rubber, I freaked and thought maybe it was motor but everytbing is fine under the hood and I could literally watch the smoke come from the brakes.
I'm taking my car first thing in the morning to get them checked but what could be the issue?

Could be your caliper not releasing leaving your pad in contact with your caliper.

You have your answer, frozen caliper! Good time to replace both front pads while replacing that caliper...Gary

Could also just be some road debris that got caked onto the brake components and burned up. My guess is a seized caliper or rusted/caked-up slide pins that are preventing the pads from sliding back away from the rotor... not uncommon at all.

Usually you would notice your car pulling to one side or resisting you as you drive. Does the car roll freely and does it pull in any direction when you coast at low speed with your hands off the steering wheel (assuming it's the front end that you were seeing the smoke coming from)?

I dont notice a single difference when driving until I got out of my car and saw the smoke. And I'm usually pretty aware if my car acts up in any ways.
I do remember when driving my brakes did seem a little louder than usual.

(I'm at a friends house about 25 miles from my house so I'm really worried about my drive home)

Auto Club? Free tow within 25 miles with base coverage! I upgraded to better 100 mile coverage since my disaster trip to Vegas 10 years ago with my Z when my radiator exploded at Baker.

UPDATE : It turns out oil was leaking onto my exhaust manifold and smoking up after long drives. Changed the oil cooler housing gasket and everything is good now.
