Here is the type of question I get a lot.
This one is from today:
I know you proably get these questions a lot, I hope you can help me though. Frist off your car is amazing man. I wish I had the money to put into my like that. I am thinking about refi my car and putting on a turbo or a supercharger. If you could give me a est of what it costs to have someone put it on, or did you do it. I live in St Louis MO and every shop around here that I knew of that installed FI kits has closed down. I take it you like the twin turbo better since you put it on, right? How much power did put down with the Stillen kit? What stage did you have? When you installed these kits did you have to upgrade any internals? I did not see anything on your list of mods. If you had it all to do over again which would you do TT of SG? I love my G but it is so damn slow. I have be debating on trading it in and getting something different then refiancing came to mind. ANy info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and amazing G!
if it matters I have a IP 04 Coupe
My reply:
Hi,
Yes I do get these type of questions a lot so I hope you don’t mind me putting the reply here so other can see it.
Thank you very much. I have put a lot of time and money into my car and love it. The car is paid off but I owe a ton on all my mods so it’s like having a payment.
Each kit takes more or less work to install because some are much more complex.
As for SC, the Stillen is the easiest and the Vortech is not that hard either but does require tapping a hole in the block for an oil return unless you want to run it into the lower pan like some have but Vortech does not recommend doing it that way.
I installed my Stillen myself and helped here and there on my TT. I could have done the TT too but it was much easier to pull the motor and I didn’t want to try and do that at home. Some guys have done it with the motor in the car like QuadCam and I give them a lot of credit.
Typical install time for the Stillen is 8-12 hours, about the same for the Vortech. A ST like the TN will take ~12 and a TT kit is more up in the 30-40 hour range if you pull the motor. The cost would be based on the shop’s rate.
I had stages 2,3 and 4 on my Stillen kit. They were all on the stock block. In fact, I’m still on my stock block right now. Stage 4 was ~340whp and ~315wtq. It was a great kit and a lot of fun. I just wanted more.
Yes I like my TT way more. Right now I am making ~425/425 and when we put the dynos over each other the Stillen only made more power until ~1700rpm. So much for lag.
My big problem with superchargers is that they are based on rpm for boost. So you have to be in the high rpm’s to get that boost. With a turbo you can be at full boost as soon as they (or it) spools up. So if you are in high gear on the freeway you don’t even need to downshift to get tons of power on demand. On the same note, that is why I like the TT kit over the ST kits. The TT spools faster and has almost no lag. It also has lots of room to grow when my motor is built (soon ).
If I had to do it again and was not going to build my motor, I would get a TN kit.
Let me know if this answered your question and if you have other questions.

Thank you for the reply Tim. I must be a dumba$$ because I do not know what a TN is. I am guessing a turbo of some kind but the N...I am drawing a black. Thank you so much for all in the information again. Good luck with the build you have a lot of people waiting to see what you do. I look forward to seeing what you do next.

There have been a number of guys who have done it including QuadCam who did his own TN and then later changed to a Greddy kit himself.

Seems a tight engine compartment to be moving around in without the motor out of the car. I am good with directions..brakes and such. Seems a better idea to have a pro do it.
You think that the stock motor will be fine with added boost? I magine boost levels would be pretty modest anyway 6-8psi?

It is tight but the TN is a lot less work than a TT kit since it keeps the oem manifolds.
Stock motor is fine on 6-8psi with good gas and a good tune. Ditch that reflash the TN kit comes with and get a UTEC.
I've had my motor (which is still stock internals) at 6-11psi for the last two years.
