I refuse to pay the dealer $40 for a part and $160 in labor.

When I went to AutoZone to get replacement belts this past summer, the counter guy said the fitment book had two choices for one of the two belts (don't remember which). The choices were about 1" different in length.
I have a very early car that had the A/C compressor replaced and drive belt(s) rerouted under a tech bulletin, so my assumption was that one length fits the original configuration and the other length fits the revised/rerouted configuration.
Not knowing which was which, I just took both and returned the incorrect one after the job was done.

question: in the link above it say .
"Before you loosen these bolts you will need to LOOSEN (dont take off) the pulley bolts first (In the picture i show which ones to loosen in red). Use a 9/16 wrench on the Power steering and Alternator pulley bolt and use a 9/16 socket on the A/C pulley bolt. Once you have loosened the bolts on the pulleys you will then be ready to get underneith the car and loosen the bolts that force the pulley up."
why do you need to loosen the pulley, can't you just loosen the tension of the pully and not loosen the actual pulley?
I'm confused
