I am becoming a believer

I know I have been all over my TS ECU for not delivering, but that's only out of honesty and hight expectations that were set for me by the dudes over there at TS...but....

As I posted in another thread (that has gotten a little off track so I am restarting one here) I made some GTech Runs today and here's what I came up with Today:

3 Runs back to back to back 0-60
5.82 with VDC on
5.82 same place with no VDC on
6.04 murdering a Z4 BMW off the line he he he

First Quarter Mile Run after all three 0-60 runs
81F outside and very low humidity
1/4 of a tank of gas and almost 300 miles on this tank
(so I am thinking that my gas mileage may have improved,
but it's too early to tell)
And in my Trunk:
Two Avaya Phone Systems
Golf Bag, etc, etc
and my 245/45 17 Kuhmos on...

14.34 @ 103.3 mph (In 3 vs. 4 like b/f the TS ECU)

The time is dead on with what I ran at the track pre Crawford and TS ECU Reflash, but the MPH is insane.

2nd Quarter Mile Run after a 2hr cool down
Now it's down to 74 F outside for a temp
I have removed all the phone and golf stuff (110 lbs on a
scale I have in my garage), but left the ALL the stuff that
came with the car, IE floor mats, etc, in the car
I got my 16' Rim/Tire down from the Attic only to find the
4th tire was dead flat with a nail in it...so no tire change yet

14.17 @ 103.9 mph (In 3 vs. 4 like b/f the TS ECU)
I almost $hit myself...I know it's a Gtech, but wow...almost 104 MPH...if it were 55 F outside and I had the car gutted and my 16" rims/tires on...Hello 13's!!!

Now I am happy with the car again!

Re: I am becoming a believer

One last thing I didn't want to forget...thanks to cool dudes like DaveO, Gurgen, the Florida Dyno Team, etc...I am experimenting with my CAI to get it to be more of a CAI rather than a HotAI.

I started by reinstalling the OEM Ram Air scoop and turning the injen heat sheild towards the motor so as to get any cold air being rammed into that intake and funnelled towards the filter...whether it works or not I don't know, but it made sense to me.

Re: I am becoming a believer

Damm boss, nice runs!! Im sure with all the stuff like you I will have, with everything in truck gutted I could have similar times, but not with my 19's!! Now I wanna save up for some 16's or 17's lightweight. I'll let you know how everything goes tomorrow, also let me know how the intake experimenting goes. My injen feels real laggy in the hot humid air, I also need to clean my filter though, we'll see. thanks for the info. Martin

Thanks for the upate, lookin good!

You still planning to dyno?
It would be great to see some before & after results.
I'd love to know how TS changes the A/F graph.

Get a Radio Shack [[<$20] remote 20' wire outside thermometer...........place it so the probe is inside the airflow [in front of MAF screen].........that way you can see what's happening air temp wise in sudden acceleration in traffic vs highway.

Every 11F you lower air temp is worth 1% density increase ~~ 1% more torque...............hot air leaks into CAI/cone means many are leaving 3, 4, 5% on the table.

Or could run structured tests with various air intake configurations under various driving conditions.

You might use a Techtom CMX-100 to read the actual air temps the ECM "sees", a thermister & ohmmeter to "see" what happens to under-hood temps at specific points and use an infrared thermometer to measure/confirm under-hood temps after completing a test cycle.

Re: I am becoming a believer

Yes, I am still planning a dyno...I need to know the real deal after all the stuff I have done/been through wtih testing and tuning.

DaveO, what kind of thermal wrap is that and where did you get it? If I could wrap the pipe wtih something that can come off without ruining the finish of the Typhoon tube that would be great...otherwise I will probably Ztube it and wrap that like you did and then get some kind of adhevise based thermal wrap to go permanently on the outside of the Heat shield.

I even thought about using the larger diamert heat sheild I got from Injen, but there is just no hood to heat shield clearance for that so I am stuck with this one...or forced to go Stillen as a good friend suggested. :-) Wink Wink

Re: I am becoming a believer

Thanks...I also saw what you have in your tag name so that answers 1/2 and it sounds like the other half it the only reason you bought that one was b/c you thought it was flow tested and no worries with the oil. Gottcha.

What's this group by thing all about?

Re: I am becoming a believer

Congrats on the good results, as some of the board members pointed out @ your initial post-TS post, it is sometimes very hard to notice the HP gain, IMO especially on the automatics. Objective tests is the way to go.

As I did the last time, I would still suggest you keep a close eye on the a/f at your next dyno, and try your best to get a pre-cat a/f measurement. There maybe more that you can squeeze out of this puppy.

Re: I am becoming a believer

There's always more right...lol...Yes, everyone was cool about my initial posts...I just wish I had Gteched the car earlier so I could really have some hard Data to go by...I just got that tire plugged so I can do the 16" Rim/Tire combo tonight if I have time adn re-Gtech it again...

Oh, and I have never dynoed this car...only the Rustang, but I am going to dyno the G asap, and I will do the A/F measurement...precat if possible...which reminds me...do you have detailed instructions as to how to do that so I can go in with all guns blazing and know what I am talking about as far as placement of the probes, etc.

Thanks as always.

Re: I am becoming a believer

well...

the dyno operator must have the capability to just plug in his o2 sensor into a standard o2 bung (some do not, some have a thin probe designed to go into the tailpipe... which only later 'emties' into a box where the w-band o2 sesor is located).

You basically need plug in the dyno 02 sensor into an o2 bung before the cat. The only 'natura' way to do it is to have a bung welded in onto the downpipe before the cat section. Another thing that COULD POSSIBLY be done (not sure here, but the idea was given to me on this board recenty), is to untwist the stock heated o2 sensor that goes on the header , and twist in the wideband dyno o2 sensor. THe trick here, if this is going to work at, is to, first of all be very acareful about it as these sensors are VERY sensitive, and second, do this on the passenger and not the driver side header o2 bung (as this is the 'backup' bank and is used in the event of hte d-side sensor failure, at least according to the FSM). When he removes the stock o2 sensor, he should not unplug it, and just have it hanging there, so as to not invoke a CEL.

So, you can be a pathfinder here of sorts. Noone has ever really performed this test:
First have the dyno guy do 2 runs with the usual tailpipe a/f measurement and note the hp/tq/a/f curve. Then have him do what we just discussed @ the third dyno run: plug in the sensor there on the p-side header bung. Notice the new hp/tq/a/f curve. If the hp/tq are not really affected (as they shouldn't be) from the first two runs, then the removal of the o2 sensor did not affect the car. Of course the impotant thing is your new a/f @ the last run. See if it is any different. It should be a little richer than the tailpipe measuremtns. Either way, if the removal of the stocker o2 sensor did not affect the ecu, than the last o2 measurement will be your most valid one.

Hope this helps
Gurgen

Re: I am becoming a believer

John,

I've used the first two insulation products on various cars. I bought the first two items from Summit Racing and the high temp duct tape from Lowes. I believe Socalted has the lace on Z-tube insulation.

1) Thermo Tech # THE-13575 - $17.88 - 12" x 24" sheet of adhesive backed insulation.

2) DEI (Design Engineering Inc) # DEI-010401 - $54.50 - 36" x 40" heat shield mat.

3) DEI (Design Engineering Inc) # DEI-010417 - $49.95 - Air tube cover kit (lace-on).

4) High temp duct tape - the shinny silver type that's normally used on furnace exhaust pipes. - $8.00. I use this as trim for or to hold the insulation in place.
