I am changing the rear brakes on my 2005 sedan 2wd, with non-Brembos. I didn't notice the little bushing on the end of one of the caliber guide pins until I was cleaning all the parts. Does the pin with the bushing on it go on the bottom or the top hole of the caliper? Or does it even matter? I searched but couldn't find the answer anywhere!

I believe you are talking about the "sliding pin" which is what the FSM calls these bolts. They both should have a rubber sleeve that fits between the head of the pin and the caliper. The above vid should be helpful to you.

 

Yes, both the top and bottom pin have the rubber boot between the bolt head and the caliper, but if you actually take each bolt out (or "slide pin" I guess) and look at the tip of each bolt, you will notice that one has a little hard plastic roller near the tip of the bolt. That DIY video does not explain which bolt goes where. If you look at the video at about 15:42, you will see him greasing the bolts, and you can clearly see the difference. Has no one noticed this before?

 

at 20:52 when one guy passes a slide pin to another guy, you can kinda see that it's not the one with a plastic bushing on it. And it's installed in to the bottom hole.


When I change my brakes I never take all that apart, I just take the entire assembly off, swap the pads and put it back on, so I never ran into this issue.

 

I believe the pin with little rubber bushing should be in bottom.

 

Damn, I just had my brakes apart too and remember seeing this.

I want to say it it goes on top, because I was never able to remove the bottom pin onnmy caliper and had to pivot it open to change the pads.

 

I've done this repair on a few cars and have seen them in both locations. However, the most common location I've seen is at the bottom of the caliper.

The fronts are the same way... think of how the wheel rotates when you're driving. The rubber ended one should be the first one the wheel spoke passes by.

 

Worst case, check out the other rear capiler on your car for reference.

 

my front brake, bottom one is rubber head. and this guy mentions same. I think front and rear should be same.
