I find it extraordinary that the first year of production, 2003, has the lowest incidence of repair. It is based on 294 cars reporting, the third highest sample (after 2007 and 2008, and not by much). That is so counterintuitive; usually first year cars have problems and need a shake-out and the subsequent years get better. Although a 300 car sample is actually pretty small and I'm not sure how valid it would be statistically without knowing the total production runs of the various years. Still, it's real data you can't get anywhere else. Some information is always better than none.

 

The stats are based on the past year, and in the past year we've had responses for 41 cars. The number you cite includes previous rounds of the survey going back eight years.

The size of the population isn't really relevant. 41 is a pretty good sample size for gaining useful information, but it's not high enough to distinguish between a 52 and a 61. So the stats for all four model years are about the same. I would not conclude from these stats that the 2003 is the most reliable. But I would conclude that all four model years are pretty reliable.

Another thing to realize is that we measure successfully completed repair trips. The older cars get, the more likely owners are to live with minor problems rather than fixing them. At this point all four model years are beyond even a CPO warranty.
