My '06 G35x has 112K miles on it, and I have some things that need to get fixed this summer while I'm on vacation - first off being this horrible frontend noise. I'm almost positive it's the right front wheel bearing. It starts with a serious knock/clunk at low speeds, that stops when the brakes are applied. For example, if I'm driving over gravel or potholes, you can hear and feel a knocking in the right front, and it stops immediately when the brakes are applied- even though the car is still moving. The clunking over potholes goes away at about 40mph, and is replaced by a hum. The hum is slightly quieter going around right curves (less weight over the right front wheel) and louder around left curves (when the right front has more weight transferred over it). The humming gets incredibly loud over 50mph, and that is what this audio sample is. Can you guys check this out and tell me if it sounds like when your wheel bearings failed?

yeah that is the wheel bearing! Had the same issue on my front driver side wheel. It actually got so bad that when I jacked the car up and shake the wheel with my hands, the whole wheel was loose because of the hub and bearing.

 

It's tough to say what the source of that is. Usually my failing wheel bearings were not affected by braking and such. They were only affected by speed, and turning and placing different loads on them would change the tone. On the highway, it sounded like a motorcycle was driving next to me.

Still, I'd investigate that wheel. Jack it up and see if the wheel moves (none of my bad bearings had any movement) Pull the wheel off, pull the rotor off, turn the hub and feel if it's smooth or not. Check the CV axles as well, and, in light of my recent experience, check the front driveshaft universal at the front differential.

If you can feel knocking, I'd venture to assume the wheel will be loose if iyou jack it up and shake the wheel (12 and 6 o'clock)
