adding gauges

Hey all,

I'm looking to add gauges to the "a" pillar most likely. I just want to know a bit more of what is going on...I'm think oil pressure and oil temp maybe volts too.

What is the best way to hook up to the engine with electronic senders? i'd have to split form the sensors somewhere or find anotehr way to tap off...what have you all done for this solution?

thanks.

In a car like this i think ur better off getting a digital read out unit which gets data from OBDII (hks greddy etc)to the factory screen rather than A-pillar which would look out of place imo.

Your a-pillar also has an airbag in it. Imagine the gauge hitting your head after the bag blows upon impact

You're fine, just mount the pod below that air bag sign. It is not an airbag, just an anchor.

E-Ticket you're right. I got here by clicking on the latest post link, without looking at what section I was in.

I went ahead and researched and confirmed the design is similar, as seen in this video, @ about :33.

In other videos as well, only a cord is deployed.

And salvador, knowing what exactly is going on with your engine at any particular time is extremely useful.

As a pilot, If I did not have oil pressure/temperature gauges, I would not be able to stand it. In these cars by the time any kind of warning has gone off, you're already up **** creek.

How about maybe instead of having gauges, have the information displayed on the screen! Sounds better to me unless the OP wants the look!

Weird, my 3 series had the same tag on the pillar, but had an actual curtain bag behind it.

OP, there aren't any ready-made pods for our cars unfortunately, but there are shops out there that can make custom pods for the gauges. They basically take a stock a-pillar trim and modify it depending on the amount of gauges you want and the gauge diameter which you will be using. I'm planning to go that route when I install my GTM SC. Basically have the boost, AFR and fuel pressure on the pod, and read everything else on my HKS CAMP2 on the screen. It doesn't look that bad TBH, there's lots of 1st gen G's that have done it and it's not bad IMO. I don't know of any shops in the US that do it but if you look in the 1st gen section or other car forums (STi, Evo, etc), I'm pretty sure you'll find what you're looking for.

I run the Torque app off my android phone. Works great and very customizable.

Here is a video of how it works (Not my video)

this is a great idea and will work much better than hardwiring gauges. I'll look around the app store and order a OBD2 bluetooth link. Thanks!
