2008 G35X, Driver Side Unknown Problem

Dear Readers,

I have a been a long time reader, far before I even purchased my G35X several months ago.

Please check the videos out, the sound will be apparent and emanates from the driver side wheel. The steering does not shake.

Links to videos:

Any help would be appreciated before I bring it into the stealership, or hopefully find a good local mechanic. Regardless, I'd like to have somewhat of an idea of what the diagnosis will be, before I bring it in.

Again, I appreciate any advice / help.

BTW, have really enjoyed my G so far, it has close to 85,000 miles.

I jacked it up and noticed the wheel has a slight wobble.

Will get more photos and videos up later this week.

Thanks

Check your lug nuts, and the CV axle night.

I'm going to suspect wheel bearing at this point

Update:

So the diagnosis per mechanic is a worn wheel hub assembly.

Make sense?

Was Quoted $221 for OEM part and 1.4 hr labor.

Total 426.06. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Driver side front. All lug nuts were torqued correctly.

Yeah it was the wheel bearing

That sounds about right for the diagnosis, though their price is a bit steep, but dealerships usually are. They are making a healthy profit on the part cost there, as you can pick up an OEM hub from an online source for around 150, or go to RockAuto and see a whole selection of aftermarket versions starting at around 50 and going up to 125 for a premium. Of course the labor is the absolute highest at a dealership as well, so they're making a bit more there too.

If you can DIY the job (it's not terribly complicated) you can save at least 300 off of that quote. Barring that, I expect you could have an independent shop do the repair with an quality aftermarket part and come in somewhere between 250 and 300.

Here's a thread with some good info for you to consider: https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sed...aring-diy.html

lol. I was just reading that.
The DIY won't be possible, don't have the time right now, incase there are any hiccups. At the moment I also lack some of the basic tools for any kind of car work.

When I asked him about bringing in a part I purchased, he wasn't too happy. So I'm sure he's making good profit in the part.

This was a private mechanic, I'm certain the dealership will be even more.

I have my previous car to rely on, 02 Sentra.... so it's not a major rush either.

Wow, the labor rate on that first quote was 160/hr so I just figured it was a dealership. That's definitely rich for an independent. The really sad part is that he may not even have been figuring it with an OEM (i.e. more expensive) part; could have just been figuring on using the one for 50.

Then, the dealership's quote at 350 for labor must have been figuring 2 hrs at 175/hr., because if that 350 was for 1.4 hrs, they'd be at 250/hr, which is insane, so again, they must have padded the time allotted. An of course, the dealership always pads their OEM part cost for repair work. I always think this is kind of sad because I can usually walk in and haggle a dealership parts clerk into giving me SOME kind of discount on parts, even if it's just 10-15%, but never any luck with service dept discounting parts used in an on-site repair.

If you have the time, you might call around a bit for a shop that will just install the part for you. Since you have a estimate of between 1.4 and 2 hrs, you can just ask their labor rate. In such a case, they may not want to do it because they claim they can't warranty the part if they didn't buy it, in which case presenting a factory part, still in it's wrapper, is the least threatening part for them since they know its quality. Come in with some no name part from China and they may tell you to take a hike.

Keep us posted on how things go.

I agree, the labor seems extremely high and the part has a hefty markup at both locations....
I'm currently in no rush to have this replaced, as I have an alternative backup car, but of course the sooner the better.

The private mechanic -did- state that the part will be OEM and coming from NAPA.
Also, he stated that, like you mentioned, if I were to bring in my own part there would be; no warranty... possibly 2x labor due to improper fitment.... etc....etc.... and I agree with the reasons why a mechanic may refuse to work with a subpar part. I myself, have experience with this replacing a starter on another car.

So as it stands currently:
I plan to order the part myself and see if there are any mechanics to put it on for a reasonable rate. (I will ask the local Nissan dealer) -which I believe would be similar to the cost of the mechanic, but less than the Infiniti dealer.

If not I will do it myself and the story will continue... lol

So, just a final update:

I will be taking the car in tomorrow to have the wheel hub assembly replaced.
The total cost of the repair including OEM part + labor:
Part: $221 (I know, a little pricey)
Labor: $189

Total Cost: $ ~ 410
Being able to drive my G again: Priceless
