Water pump maintenance not listed?

Can someone tell me when and if the pump needs replacement on a 2008 g35x? There are no leaks, the serpentine belt is new, our cars have timing chains and not belts, so I haven't had a reason to change the water pump yet.

Is this something that requires replacement if it becomes a problem with leaks, or is there a scheduled interval when it has to be replaced? I looked on the manual everywhere but couldn't find it... And God forbid I ask the filthy dealer, they'll just say yes to anything.

Most if not all water pumps have a weep hole. When the Water pump goes bad, coolant will seep out of the weep hole nonstop. As for life, it depends.

For example, on my 2000 Jeep Cherokee, the original water pump had 173.5k miles on it and still going strong. Ended up getting replaced due to the gasket itself failing and leaking coolant. Since I had it off, might has well replace it with a brand new $50 water pump.

The water pump is driven by the timing chain and is inside the engine. It's not an easy replacement (like on my SR20 engine in my 240SX) and isn't a common item to break. Just like a fuel filter, Nissan/Infiniti has made these "non-serviceable" items.

Woah what? Non serviceable item? Can anyone confirm this?

Well, it's replaceable, just not something that actually needs to be replaced on a set schedule. Just like the timing chain, that stuff doesn't need to be replaced unless something actually breaks.

My water pump went out about 120K it's usually the bearings that go (with mine), but sometimes the fins can rot off.

On the < 06 changing the water pump isn't too difficult if you're careful. There is an access port where it slides in and out. I believe on the 07+ you have to take the whole front cover off, so that kind of sucks.

So interestingly enough, the dealer guy said leave the water pump be unless I see leaks, sounds, or issues... Either he's incompetent, or honest?

Unless you have the engine out, doing major engine work that grants you easy easy, or otherwise severely OCD. Leave it be.

You know the saying, "if it ain't broke, dont fix it"?

I'd say he's just being honest there.
