AC question

We had a cold front come through today and this morning it was 17 degrees. I was playing around with my air conditioning while driving to work. I noticed that the ac did not engage when I hit the A/C button. Is this because its so cold outside? Thanks for any feedback you might have.

What do you mean it didnt engage, are you saying your idling rpm didnt rise due to the increased load?

If you set your auto ac to 60 degrees and it's 17 degrees out, the job's already done.

Correct, my idle did not raise nor did I hear the click when the compressor turns on. Is this normal in cold temperatures?

The a/c uses an interior temperature sensor. It was probably less than 60 inside your car.

It was on manual mode. I went back out during lunch while the temperature was at 36 degrees to try again. This time the compressor came on. I guess it doesn't turn on if the temperature is too low . Thanks for all the input guys.

That's not right, mine still works irregardless of temp outside, it was single digits this morning and it worked. What if you have to defrost your windshield in the cold,. ac is much needed. maybe you had it on feet/defrost already, in which engaging the AC button doesn't really do anything, it says on whether you like it or not. Try it with the setting on the face on and then see if it click on and off.
