Question for nutrition and sports guys

I've been having some really horrible leg, toe, and foot cramps lately. In the last week I've developed an eye twitch. (I feel so pretty )

I've been exercising more than usual, am I developing some kind of deficiency? Is there something that I can add to my diet that would lessen some of the cramps?

And here I thought you were just winking at me.

You're stressing out too much. You need to go to a spa and get pampered!

Cramps = not enough port and chocolate. Or else you're pregnant.

j/k, could be short on potassium? Eat a couple bananas.

I was winking at you Rudy!

I'm barely finding the time to get the exercising in, let alone book a spa day...
I'm not a spa kind of girl. I go stir crazy stuck there. I keep thinking of all the stuff I need to do.

Make sure you are getting enough calcium too! Muscles work with potassium AND calcium so it's not just for bones. Be careful though because too much potassium is bad. If it doesn't go away, squeeze in some time for a doctor's appointment and they can check your potassium levels with some blood work.

Grace winks and me when she bends over. haha :hide:

Grace. When I was working out and was trying Akins, I used to get bad hamstring cramps. I think it was the ultra low carbs doing me in.

So make sure you are getting an adequate amount of carbs if you are working out.

could be potassium
or even lack of hydration, i get really bad stomach cramps when i don't get enough water, and calf cramps that hurt so bad they wake up up from a dead sleep

but it really hard to pin point exactly what it is with out knowing what your diet is like or how much you are working out

i've been told that muscle twitches are caused by dehydration. try to increase your water intake.

I usually stay away from a lot of carbs. I put weight on quickly with breads and pastas so I've always avoided them. My diet is mainly lean protein and tons of veggies.

The lack of calcium makes sense. I don't like milk, ice cream, or cheese.

Good point. I haven't been drinking a lot of water.

Dehydration will cause muscle cramps for sure. Calcium will help with leg cramps and potassium will also. Try drinking more water and eating a banana every day for a couple days and see if that works. If you don't take a calcium supplement you should take one every day (we are getting to that age girl). I also take a magnesium supplement every night. Also be sure to take a few minutes after working out and stretch. If you can walk for 15 min. or so it will help alleviate the lactic acid build up in your muscles and that might help the cramping. Then go home and pour a glass of wine to drink with your chocolate! All better.

Start by increasing your water intake. If the symptons persist, I would go to a doctor to get checked out as a precautionary measure.
