The biggest thing that I have found is to look at every little calorie. For the longest time I would laugh when someone would go to McDonalds and then order a diet soda but now I get it. Sometimes you are stuck with fast food but that doesn't mean you have to go crazy when you are. Look online for calorie info whenever you can so you know what the "better" choices are at your favorite places and order accordingly.

Calories are kind of like relationships - the little things count for a lot when put all together. A 20oz Coke is 250 calories. If you have 2 of those a day (not really that much to most people), after a week you have 3500 calories. 3500 calories, if you do your research, is equal to one pound gained.

COUNT YOUR CALORIES!!! not just your carbs and fat grams

This is very simple:

Eat 3 squares a day
Low fat
Low sugar
Low salt
Avoid all cheese
Do not consume more calories than you expend
Keep hydrated
Eat from the 4 food groups

You do this, and do low impact internal and external excercise regularly, and you are done!

My approach is a little different, but everyones is. I don't count calories, I go by portion size and try to stick to a clean eating diet. We don't eat fast food so that helps alot, I'm very careful about combining lean proteins with complex carbs. Nothing processed, no sugar and no simple carbs. I have a mental issue with calories from years of keeping track and find I either eat not enough or get discouraged and eat too much. This way has been very helpful for the past couple years and I don't feel like I can't have something, I just find ways to make it clean and eat very small portions. I can tell if I have over ate and try to make up for it by working out harder. I already work out 6-7 days a week, twice on 3 of those.

eating small meals and snacks all throughout the day helps me keep my weight down. try not to ever "feel" hungry. nibble on healthy snacks. if you go hungry, your body will store as fat the next big meal you intake. i also workout 7 days a week so i'm fairly active.

cut out all simple and refined sugars and don't eat after 6 or 7 pm.

I used this link to give myself an idea of what I needed to bulk up...
http://forums.menshealth.com/eve/for...47/m/693101221

It's really useful for whatever goals you have. I paired it with www.sparkpeople.com (as suggested by Cheryl) to really keep count of my intake. I've also cut down on the bad (junk) carbs and use Isopure protein powder. I could never eat 150g protein a day without it.

SparkPeople was great for me while I was using it. When I started working back before Christmas, I just let it all go because I had no time and then I just completely fell off the wagon. I'm trying to get back on now though and I haven't given up!

What? Give me a good reason to avoid a great source of protein. You must be kidding.

yeah cheese can be good, but some are extremely high in fat, you have to be picky about your cheese

Name a cheese that isn't high in fat? I can't think of any, to be honest. I try to avoid it, although cheese is definitely a favorite food. It makes everything taste better!

White meat has significantly less fat and thus significantly less calories than dark meat (in terms of chicken - white vs. dark). Duck is high in fat too.

High in fat is usually the best reason given.

Another is that a very large portion of the population are, to some degree or other, lactose intolerant and it can cause bloating and a generally bad feeling.

A really good "snack" I have found lately are RAW almonds.

Quote:
A one-and-a-half ounce handful of almonds is a leading source of vitamin E and magnesium and offers protein, fiber, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron. Almonds are also the leading source of monounsaturated fat among America's most consumed nuts. Of the 14 grams of total fat found in one ounce of almonds, about 64 percent is monounsaturated. This 'good' fat plays a role in helping almonds lower harmful cholesterol just as effectively as expensive drugs, according to a recent study published by the American Heart Association.

That quote and nutritional information can be found here: http://www.nutsonline.com/nuts/almon...-no-shell.html

A HUGE amount of calcium for such a small serving size and I can say from experience that they are pretty filling "feeling" because of the fiber.
