What time do you prefer to exercise?
I'm not a morning person so working out before work is pretty well out of the question, and I find that by the time I make my way through traffic and have some dinner after work I don't have much motivation left.

I'm very fortunate in that I don't have to deal with traffic issues and I work 25 miles from home. I pretty much make my own hours and only work 5-6 hrs. a day. I usually get my run in in the morning @ 7-7:30 I go then I usually get to the gym about 3:30 each day. I'm home between 5-5:30 everyday and have plenty of time to make dinner, lunches, shower, pick up any messes and relax.

I would prefer to workout in the morning but I'm in the office at 0630. I had been working out during my lunch hour but that faded after my accident so the evenings before I head home is going to be my new time.

^I'm similar being self employed. I work a couple of hours a day on average so have lots of time to fit things in. I usually work out in the mid afternoon.
When I had a corporate job it was anytime between 5:30 and 8:00 right after work and before supper. A couple of weekdays when I was doing doubles I would also get in the morning at about 6:00 am. |

Didn't you feel drained exercising before your meal after a full day of work?

I get up at 4am M-F to work out....I'm at the gym by 4:15 usually, and leave there around 5:40 to go home and get ready for work (work starts at 7am). I find that if I put it off till the afternoon, I usually find an excuse to not work out....I tell myself "I'll be good and eat healthy all day". But by getting up and taking care of it in the morning, I'm good to go for the day....feel healthy and energized! |

Ive heard that before (about the afternoon workouts) but the nice part about my job here is that my boss works out as well so he PROMOTES working out daily if it can be fit into the work schedule. He works out before heading home (runner) because he does not like the "spiked" hair he gets after a shower (Sr VP) but i DON'T have that problem. lol

I could do that for sure but MAN that would be a long day for me. It's really a good thought because I agree that its an energizer for the day. I'm a morning person anyway so it would not be THAT much of a difference for me (maybe an hour up earlier)

You might have to just try different times in order to see what works best for your schedule and energy levels. There are some days I have to skip my morning workout and double up in the afternoon. I usually work out twice a day for 3 days a week then once a day the other 4. My boss is a hard core cyclist so he doesn't care if I take off to go work out in the middle of the day if necessary. I don't really have set work hours though either. I'm NOT a morning person and if it wasn't for my dogs I would probably do a longer workout in the eve. and skip mornings, my first mile in the morning is just a blur, luckily mid dog drags me along. haha.

If I had to ride my bike early in the morning I'd probably fall off! haha. Although I have fallen off in the driveway, so embarrassing, and that was after I made it 27 miles with no problem, just unclipped the left foot, leaned to the right and crash. Luckily no neighbors saw me. I was so upset because my husband had just bought me my new bike, paid 2,800. for it and I scraped the handlebars when I fell. He thought it was funny! So be careful on your bike, don't be like me.

No, my body was used to it. I was tremendously fit and ran between 10k and up to 25K each day after work. If I needed some energy before or during I would do some simple sugars like gatorade or perhaps banana etc. Working out before a good meal is the best way to do it. Your body repairs much more quickly with the a balance of proteins and carbs right after exercise. |

I can't run if I've eaten anything more than a banana, or a couple bites of oatmeal. Did you eat anything while running, (your long runs) like gels or anything? I haven't done an early morning run of over 8 miles yet without eating. I have on the weekend but usually it's 1.5 or 2 hrs after eating a pretty good breakfast.

I thought it would be miserable, but I find I actually kind of like it. I was really only planning on keeping up the morning work outs until I get married in less than two weeks, but I like them so much that I'm planning to keep it up indefinitely. It does make it feel like the day should be over by the time you get to lunch, but it's not so bad. But I eat all throughout the day, so it's not so bad. I don't do this to build muscle or anything....I'm just going for toning, so I don't do the protein shakes and such....I stick with tons of produce, lean meats, and whole grain options. But I also give myself plenty of "cheats" (a piece of dark chocolate, a cookie every once in a while, etc) so I don't start craving and end up binge eating. |
