In praise of my wife

So I'm a pretty athletic guy - I've done an Ironman, and all kinds of randomly long adventure races, mountain bike races, etc. At any time, without having worked out recently, I'm able to go for a decent 5 mile run, or a 50 mile bike ride, or whatever.

My wife, on the other hand, is completely non-athletic, and uninterested in it. She does, however, go to a fitness class at our local gym, and the other day invited me along. Sure, what the heck, should be fun...

Holy Christ!! Halfway through the workout, and 200 lunge / military press combinations later, I'm starting to get lightheaded. I finally decide if I don't take a break, I'm going to pass out on the floor.

Two days later, my right leg is slightly swollen and hurts to the point that it's hard to walk on it. Jeez, who knew?!?

Did you read his post? Ironman, running 5 miles, biking 50 miles... you have to be in decent shape to be able to do any of those things.

^ yeah...I'm guessing he was just doing something that was using a different set of muscles, which is why he had a hard time @ the gym

Sorry to hear about your leg. Hope it's nothing major.

Yeah, I can relate. I am a former marathoner and long distance runner who is pretty much done with running due to injury. I started attending a "fried legs & toasted abs" class 2x/week. It took me about 5 classes before my legs weren't absolutely hammered all the time, and the class is much tougher now than when I started.

We had 3 young "in shape" firefighters come to the class the other night. All three had to bail half way through and had to spill their guts. I'm the old guy in the class and it made me smile seeing that.

What kind of time did you do your ironman in?

Awesome!

Was aiming for 13:00 IM time, and finished in 12:54

Very nice. Great job.

I'm curious about your splits in the various disciplines, specifically how long did your run take after the swim and bike?

Hmmm, will have to look that up. My run time was hindered by a serious knee problem starting at mile seven, so it was slower than expected. Will edit when I find it.

SECOND EDIT:>> (Oops, was looking at the times and realized they don't add up to 12:54. Looked again and realized I used my transition time (9:46 minutes) instead of my bike time (6:05 hours). Corrected below)
  • Swim time: 1:26 (2.4 miles)
  • Bike time: 6:05 (112 miles)
  • Run time: 5:03 (26.2 miles)

Rest of the time was transition time. I tried to keep my HR below 70% at all times, and was about 95% successful; my normal swim time for that distance is about 1:10, bike time about 5:45. Don't know about marathon time, this is the only marathon I've ever done , but my pace for a 15 mile race was about 9:00/mile or so.

Other than the knee, the IM went great, really enjoyed it.

Thanks for taking the time to check that out for me.

It looks like your plan worked really well. My run times are a lot faster but I know my swim/drown (can't) would be horrible and the bike probably wouldn't be great either. It's obviously not fair to compare one marathon to another done at the end of an ironman!

BTW, congrats to your wife on surprising you with her fitness.
