My Journey - First Triathlon

At the request of a fellow member, I'm posting this up. It's a blog entry/email I sent out to my family. I was inspired by the 30 day challenge thread on these boards to do this.

My prior attempts at dieting have not wielded any results, usually because of a lack of motivation. To motivate myself this time, I've signed up for the Catalina Island Sprint Triathlon. Yes, it's a giant step, but it's a giant step I need to take.

I've been self conscious about myself ever since I stopped going to my trainer. I wish I could turn back time and fight to stay with the trainer. Slowly but surely, I let myself go. In a matter of months, I ballooned from 200lbs solid up to 250lbs of flab. I hate looking in the mirror. I hate being out of breath after a short sprint. I don't want to self loathe anymore.

The triathlon takes place on November 8th. It's a race that includes swimming, biking, and running. It is a test of one's endurance and strength. This particular one breaks down to the following:

1/2 mile swim
13 mile bike ride
3 mile run

I chose this sprint triathlon since it's far enough for me to train effectively for it and it's short enough for me to accomplish at my level of health. While some of you may look at this and say "that's easy!" well, if it is....then try it. Let me know when you stop throwing up.

I've started my training a few days ago. I've been watching what I eat, running, and swimming. I have not taken my bike out to a shop to get tuned up, but I will soon. These LA hills are a bitch, but it should be fun. I believe I've given myself enough time to get ready for this event and I hope you all will support me on my quest.

Congratulations for taking on this challenge. You're well on the way just by making the admission you did, by determining your goal and starting the program.

If you can find someone else training for the same event (or talk someone serious into it) it will help motivate you.

I was a couch potato at age 38 and started running because I was was coaxed by my wife to run around the block (hilly area) and couldn't keep up with her or even keep running. 11 months later I ran my first of 15 marathons over 7 years with my last one being my fastest. I qualified for Boston after 7 marathons and ran it 3 times. Injury has prevented me from running seriously anymore however I remain active and very fit at age 49. It has changed my life tremendously.

You can do it Slaytan. Good luck.

Good luck with the triathalon and the training! I agree with RBull....see if you can convince someone else to train with you, or find someone who's already training and train with them. It does wonders for motivation to have someone else there....that way if you're ever having an off day or just don't feel like working out, they can convince you and motivate you to do so (and vice versa).

Also, after you complete your first marathon, set a new goal....something equally or more difficult (something so you can't become complacent). I'm in the process of setting a new goal for myself because I recently achieved my old goal....now that I'm not quite sure what I want my next goal to be, my motivation is slipping a bit

Keep us posted on your progress

He's talking about a "sprint triathalon". That's a shorter version of the regular triathalon with the three disciplines of swim, bike, run.

It's not a marathon. A marathon is a running event which is a 26.2 mile race.

Good call....I think this is going to be a long day. The only reason I can imagine I said marathon instead of triathalon is a serious brain fart....woops!

I've been setting little mini-goals for myself while I train. When I started, I couldn't lap my pool more than twice. I'm at five laps after six sessions. So far so good. My ultimate goal is to lap my pool 40 times.

I still have to work on my running game, but I know that it will improve in time as well. Right now, I'm looking at an 18 minute mile. I hope to drop it down to a 15 minute mile within the next month.

^you've already got the basics down. Everything should be broken down exactly the way you're doing it. I believe inside of 3 months you'll likely get your 5k running time down into the 10-12 minute mile range.

Thanks for the confidence. I'm going to kick up my running efforts; my heart rate monitor arrived today so I'll actually be able to put a number on my progress.

With a little work, RBull is very right! I shaved 2 minutes off my 1.5 mile in a month, and that's with bad bad eating and sleeping habits.

I'll definitely keep an eye on your progress! Good luck

It's going to be a busy few days for me coming up, so I'll update early.

I fixed up my bike last Saturday and took her out for a 2 mile spin. She's working flawlessly! Once I pick up my helmet, I'll take her out for my routine training. Safety first.

I ran and swam on Sunday and Monday. I've improved my swimming a lot. I did some interval running on Monday with mixed results. My heart rate was over my max limit, but I made decent time. I'm going to make an appointment with my doctor to get a physical and some advice on how I should go about this. Unfortunately, it will have to wait until next week.

Too bad I'm on the east coast and can't do this with you, sounds like a blast!

Congrats on taking all the right steps. Sounds like you're approaching this safely and smartly. Don't worry about the interval runs, they're tougher than just plain old running because of the fact that your heart rate is elevated. They do, however, make you stronger and are very much worth the effort!

Well, that's kind of the point of this thread. I'm taking you guys on my journey both as a motivation and support unit for myself. If this inspires anyone to do the same, even better.

I'm still going to the doc because I'm due for a physical and I need to know what I should look out for while I'm training or if he has any recommendations for my health sake.
