Bowflex
I am contemplating purchasing a Bowflex Ultimate or Extreme sometime this fall. They certainly aren't cheap so I am just wondering if anyone has one and if they are worth the money.

the only difference between a bowflex and a gym membership is the gym membership comes with half naked girls! =)

Friend of mine had it. Said it's one of the most effective machines he has ever used.
But, since it was always right there at home, after a while, he couldn't motivate himself to keep exercising on it. So, he sold it and used the money for a gym membership so he feels obligated/motivated to exercise. I don't know personally. I have a gym membership. I've never touched a Bowflex before. Although, I'd really like to give it a try.

I am not one to get a gym membership myself. There is a gym adjacent to my office, so it doesn't get much more convenient than that, but I would much rather do everything from the comfort of my own home. I have an elliptical machine that I use religiously during the colder months so I am not worried about not being dedicated enough to use it. I've never seen a Bowflex before let alone use one, but I've heard some good things about them. Just curious what everyone else thought about them.

Do you mind me asking which Bowflex you have?

Shane, I don't know a lot about them, but I think they fine especially for what you're likely to use it for. I'll ask around for you and let you later this week when I get back from Bathurst.
If you're going ahead I suggest you consider a used one unless you don't care about the money. Have a look on Kijijji or somewhere like that and you'll likely see them for about half price. |

Thanks Deane, any info you find out will be helpful. Once I decide to pull the trigger and decide on the one I want, I'll definitely look at used first. ![]()

I know I'll find some folks at the gym who can provide feedback. If you call bowflex they'll send a video showing the models etc. |

I got one
I love it. As it was mentioned before it's hard to motivate your self to exercise regularly. But I've been doing quite well for past couple of months and it's amassing.

I have an ultimate in my office gym and a cross trainer. My business partner uses the boxflex, I do not. I go to a gym at the military base near Edmonton 4 to 5 times a week and have been body building for almost 20 years. I am used to free weights and the resistance style training that a bowflex provides just feels wrong to me but my business partner uses it all the time and likes it. These things are not cheap, if you can try one first, that would be best.
But as far as quality and ease of use goes, they are the cats a$$. I think that as long as you are not a weights trainer, you would be happy with one. |

I tried out the Bowflex and didn't like the size, instability and construction. Every moment on the Bowflex I felt I was going to break something.
Good thing I stuck with my trusted Soloflex. An atomic bomb can't destroy that thing. |

Well, I was given a bowflex about 6 months ago. I used it for a bit but not consistantly. I find that when you have machines at your house you do not stay on a strict workout program. That is why I prefer the gym. But that is just me. Also fo the record. I pay only $168 for the whole summer.
I would take a free weight gym over the bowflex any day of the week. Reason being: A) You can perfect the proper form with free weights B) You are limited on the exercises by that one machine C) You only pay a little bit more for all of the weights but you will NEVER outgrow it. I have outgrown machines resulting in buying a new one. D) You can always add onto the weights and machines. Meaning if you get the Olympic 300lbs set with just a bench and curl bars. You can add a leg press, shoulder shrug machines, ect without buying more weights. E) I have made this mistake before by buying a machine instead of free weights or joining the gym. F) It can be cheaper if you buy used equipment(Which I highly recommend) G) Free weights are always better, I guess that is an opinion, but LOTS of dedicated lifters will agree. Sorry if I did get off topic but I would just think about free weights instead of a machine if you don't want to go to the gym. -AGThing1227 P.S if you need help with a workout program/exercises let me know. I know some people and have had some years learning due to all of my injuries in High School. |
