How come athletes get inside a tub full of ice and water?

I'm assuming it's so that the muscles can recover a lot quicker. And how come more people don't do this?

No. Cold anything makes your entire body do things slower. Even your metabolism slows.

Cold keeps things from swelling, so after a game or a hefty workout, that pain that you might normally have the next day is actually a lot of really small bruises and muscle tears. To keep the swelling down, and ultimately promote healing, an ice bath can slow the initial, and often worst effects of strenuous activity.

^ Absolutely correct.

And most people don't do it because getting into a tub of ice and water isn't actually pleasant...

When I use to work out, I would jump in the ice pool after every workout. I also used the sauna and whirlpool a lot.

+1

To answer newguy, most people can't handle a tub of cold ice. It takes mental toughness to stay in. It's also a PITA to prepare since few facilities would offer this.

^it takes longer than "a few seconds" to adjust to it. After a few minutes you're numbed but the bodies response to try and keep warm is to shiver. When you stop doing that it's game over!

I thought it was so things would shrivel up and it would be more of a comical thing when people got out
