Any cons when doing cardio and weight lifting on the same day

I've been weight lifting and then I do cardio for about 20 minutes. This is what my schedule looks like.

Mon - Back and Triceps/30 minutes on the treadmill
Tue - 1 hour on the treadmill
Wed - Legs and abs.
Thursday Chest and biceps/30 minutes on the treadmill
Fri - 1 hour on the treadmill.

I plan on doing this for the next four months. Depending on the results I see then will determine how I change the diet and the work out. Basically trying to cut and I'm doing high reps.

depending on your workout running is bad after power lifting if your trying to bulk up per say...it usually will tone or eat muscle up if you run more the a mile and a half to two....everyone has a different body makeup tho

Yeah I'm not bulking up. I'm not even doing close to my max in any of the lifting sets. Just high rep stuff.

1 hour of cardio is a bit much i think. 30 minutes or so is usually good enough. do too much cardio and you will start to burn off muscle. from experience and other gym rats, they agree that 1 hour is a bit much unless your training for endurance runs. if cuts is your big concern, if you had your eating down to a T, you can get cut from that depending on your body type/build. A few of my boys that do competitions don't even hit cardio that often and are cut up. genetics plays a big part as well tho

I suggest you change your program to lift at least 2x per week on all body parts. Cardio on the 4 days is good but the intensity and mixing it up is important. On one of the 4 days I recommend you add 5 minutes each week to the duration of the Friday run cutting back 30% or so every 4th week, going up to 2 hours or so. I also suggest on one of the other cardio days you add intensity -either intervals or lactate threshold runs. Consider biking on a couple of those days for 30 minutes or so of the program to mix it up and balance your leg muscles and minimize injury.

I run for 30min before I lift weights each time I go to the gym.

You are going to burn up glycogen stores by doing so and will not get your optimal workout in.

wives' tale.

In what way are they counterproductive?

You won't be burning any significant glycogen stores from a short 30 minute run or from lifting in a typical session he described. Even if you did, what is not going to be optimal?

+1. I usually lift for about two hours and then do a 15 min session of HIIT. I'm currently cutting though (no emo), so I'm not seeing any muscle gains.

However, my strength is increasing and I'm burning fat at a rate I'm happy with... so I see no problem with doing cardio and lifting on the same day.

Disclaimer: Opinions are like a$$holes... well you know the rest.

Until I see conclusive facts that cardio and lifting will ultimately be bad for you, then I'll stop.

If you do cardio beforehand, you will tap into your glycogen stores, which are used alot during anaerobic exercises(lifting weights) which will limit the maximal amount of work you can do and thus limit muscle growth. Glycogen is not replenished fast enough. Even when doing high reps, you still need to go to failure for optimal results, by limiting your energy stores, you are not getting an optimal workout.

The reason to not do cardio after a workout is that you are depriving your muscle cells of their much needed protein etc and rest at a key point in time, right after the workout. You should get food into your body as soon as you can after your workout, and cardio prolongs this so you don't build muscle as fast.

I guarantee that you will gain more muscle by alternating cardio and workouts on opposite days, rather than doing them on the same day.
