Low carb + lifting mix?

I am current on a low carb diet (approxmiately 15grams of carbs per day). I go to the gym at least 3-4 times a week and I lift for a 90 minutes each time. I was wondering if the low carb diet is counter productive to my lifting. I don't have big plans on bulking as I am very somewhat bulky from my teenage days. I just don't want my chest and arms to shrink as a result of my low carb diet and look like a skinny @ss. My target is to lose 15lbs of fat, mostly stored in my lovehandles and mid section.

I don't really feel tired because of my diet, but I do feel like I'd be able to do more once I start introducing carbs into my life again. Thoughts?

Basically you're doing a ketogenic diet. Generally, it's much harder to gain muscle while you're in ketosis but it is still possible. I don't really think you should worry about gaining muscle with this diet, but you should worry about losing it. Just make sure you're taking in around 0.9 grams of protein a day and protein will be spared as a form of energy. You should also be taking in a high amount of fat, as it's going to be your only source of energy. You DON'T want protein breakdown to occur. Keto is pretty successful with most people, in fact I'm doing it right now and I'm about 13% BF. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask anymore questions.

yeah i am actually taking in a bit of protein and fat on this diet. Eggs, cheese, steaks, chicken, turkey, bacon sometimes, sausages sometimes have been my main source of food for now.

I'm trying to avoid looking at the scale because whatever weight I lose I might gain back in muscle weights since I am also lifting. I am sure I am in Ketosis right now bceause yesterday morning i awas at about 198, after work out last night I was at 195 but this morning I went back up to 199 again . I look significantly tigher mid section and my face so I know I am losing fat....

what do you eat on low carb diet MIA?

The foods I usually always include are eggs, bacon, puerto rican white cheese, chicken, steak, more eggs (lol), peanut butter and cashews (not much though 'cause of carbs), and cottage cheese (amazing protein content per serving). That's basically what I eat everyday while I'm cutting weight (adds up to about 2200 calories every day).

Oh, I'm also going to try to buy a bottle of fish oil (with both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids). That should help get my fat content up everyday. I'd recommend you get some of that or some flaxseed oil.

lmao yeah I'm always trying to find things to mix with it. I usually get a cup of CC, sprinkle a lot of cinnamon on top, and then mix in a tablespoon of peanut butter. It tastes pretty damn good if you make sure to get a little bit of PB with each bite.

I have those at home, maybe i'll start takign them. The setbacks from this diet is the freakin constipation man. My bowel movements are so sh!tty (no pun intendeD) now, I started taking some fiber a few days ago, hopefully that will help out a lil bit.

yeah the fiber should help. but don't worry you'll get to your goal as long as you stick with it. oh btw, are you doing carb refeeds every other week?

I'm barely on my 12th day so I havent gotten to any refeeds yet. My plan was to stay right at 5g for 2 weeks then refeed 10 more each week. Realistically, my intake has been anywhere from 10-18 as some times it hard to know for sure. Whats your schedule like?

well the first two weeks I didn't do a refeed, then I did one the next week (third week). Now I do one every other week. I go all out btw, about 400g of carbs on a refeed lol. But let me tell you.... my workouts are insane after refeeds. Have you read the book by Lyle McDonald, "the ketogenic diet?" I have a link to it in PDF if you want it.

yeah bro send me that link.

Ohh you're talking about that kinda refeed.......i thought you were referring to weekly small increments.

I have heard you shouldnt overload carbs after a low carb diet or else your body goes into shock.....maybe that was a lie lol.

wtf... send me your email in a PM bro, the file exceeds the forums limits

but yeah maybe what you're doing is carb cycling? and no your body doesn't go into shock lmao. it just replenishes glycogen stores. on the CKD (cyclical keto diet) you have a huge refeed about every 7-10 days. there's also another type and it explains it in the book (TKD - targeted keto diet) where you eat carbs pre and post workout only.
