Yeah.. that doesn't tell me much. I have heard of conditions (harmful) that can form from taking too much vitamin C. I'm just wondering if anyone REALLY knows what the deal is.. any info out there guys ?

I know guys.. your not helping. Vitamin C is one of those things people tend to take alot of when they aren't feeling well (i.e. flu, cold, etc.) With flu season coming around, I thought it would be appropriate to ask. Does anyone know at what amount is vitamin C harmful?

I couldn't agree more, all things in moderation. Besides, after a certain point your body will stop absorbing vitamin C and you'll just piss it out. |

The two docs in my family recommend at least 2,500mg per day.

This is the closest thing I could find, now that I am not at work and able to search freely. Here is a report by Jack Phillips, I found from www.askjeeves.com when asked 'how much vitamin c is too much?'
Like stated above... "Large doses can have a laxative effect causing looseness of the bowel." But... "However, physicians experienced with this therapy recommend intakes near the bowel tolerance limit, said to be between 4 and 15 grams per day for people in good health." That's a big gap. Hm.. I guess I'll have to settle for that answer.

"Questions on what daily amounts of Vitamin C could be considered to be an "overdose" still come up on a regular basis, to which unfortunately, there is no universal answer applicable to everyone, because overdosing on Vitamin C - just like overdosing on any other nutrient - is RELATIVE to the level of those elements that interact with Vitamin C. In other words, it all depends on their ratio to Vitamin C." Source: Acu-cell.com

If your diet consists a variety of fruits and vegetables you should be good. Eat right, exercise, and you shouldn't be concerned with the flue or a cold. If you eat the right stuff on a regular basis, exercise, and maintain a generally healthy life style (no smoking, not too much booz, get enough sleep), then you should be good. - I'm not saying the above will give you some sort of a natural immunization against the flu, but it will sure help to keep your illness to a minimum with easier and faster recovery. Other than that, I suppose you can pop a multi vitamin like Centrum once a day - of course you would want to talk to your doctor before taking any supplements.

Vitamins and Minerals should be part of your daily intake regardless if it's flu season or not. So really you’re missing the point on the whole vitamin topic (at least that's how I feel). It's to keep your body healthy and able to combat diseases that are so plaguing the U.S. (and the rest of the world). You are right about the dosage on the back of the bottle of the supplement. However, the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) in some products (still investigating on others) are too low when other countries take double, triple or quadruple the amount we are taking and they are completely healthy. This doesn't pertain to just Vitamin C, this comment is in general to all natural supplements. Remember, other countries can not afford dietary supplements like Americans so they get their main nutrition through food. Natural food that is affordable and accessible like fruits, vegetables, grains and none of this fast food garbage. For the past 50 years the RDA has been constantly increasing because with expanded research showing that we have been taking too little this entire time (United States). Ok stopping myself now or I will be typing all day long. ![]() |

You shouldn't exceed 2,500 mg daily. But I heard overtaking vitamin C isn't really that bad...or harmful from what I've been told though.
