Anyone here drinks protein shakes?

I work out about 3-4 days a week surprisingly consistently for the past 2 years. I'm trying to achieve that lean muscle look with more body mass. I want to get bigger and I heard that drinking protein shakes are the way to go. All of the proteins that I've tried tasted nasty, are there any out there that you guys recommend?

i've had my fair share of crappy shakes. from what i've found, although i love chocolate--the chocolate flavored shakes taste pretty bad.
I use GNC Whey Protein in Vanilla. tastes pretty good with water, or add a banana or whatever and make a smoothie out of it.

Protein shakes are not necessarily going to make you leaner. It is also near impossible to add muscle without adding some fat because you must overconsume calories. Decide which you want first mass or cut body fat. If you want to drop fat a high protein diet can be beneficial and stay away from carbs late at night. Bad foods are sugar, pop, pasta and rice. Also sick to higher repetitions in the gym with shorter rest periods between sets. More cardio at a low intensity also helps. 60% of your results come straight from your diet. Sorry to keep going (I am a personal trainer) if you have any other questions let me know.

That's what I have at home, except it's Strawberry. The thing that I can't stand about it is that is has that "powdery" taste to it and no matter how much I stir, I can't get it to completely dissolve.

Thanks a lot for the tips. I would love to cut down my body fat and burn off more calories than I consume. I know cardio is the way to go but I just don't have time to do any cardio. I work out about 1.5 hours in the morning before which is barely enough time for me to get my workout with the weights in. But my main thing is my diet b/c I'm usually clueless on what I can or can't eat.

I agree with ChiTownG. Diet is very important. I've found it best if I keep food as unprocessed as possible, keep things simple, and focus on a balanced diet with increased protein and fiber. 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight per day is a good rule of thumb for people who work out. Keep fats low, although I've found it helpful to mix weeks of lower-carb and higher-fat in now and then. Also helpful is a splurge now and then (low fat Ben & Jerry's works for me). Protein drinks and meal replacements are helpful as snacks but shouldn't be a staple. Stick with a brand name - Myoplex, Met-Rx, Next Nutrition, Lean Body, or others - that tastes good. Bulking up and leaning out ARE somewhat distinct, however.

What's wrong with steroids? Honestly? I know there are side effects, but what if you don't abuse it?

...anyone have any light they could shed on this matter?

IMO, allthewhey protein isolate is the best on the market.

It's not a magic shake to making you bigger. It is what it is...protein.

You might also want to do some research on creatine.

Thumbs up

I mix Chocolate Protein Powder with bananas, strawberries, non fat milk, and crushed ice in a blender. Yummy in my tummy in about 30 seconds!

Get BIG (mass) so eat a lot, then lose body fat (cutting carbs). You will be muscular, but well defined!

I personally like Designer protein... I stick with Strawberry. I sometimes will crush up fresh strawberrys or bananas or even grahm crackers or nilla wafers... Try to mix it up because what usually stops you is getting tired of the drink... I have always stuck with 1g of protein for every 10lbs of your desired weight when working out... Another great drink, but it is hugh in carbs and makes more of a sports/activity drink is GatorPro... You can find it on Gatorades site... Used to drink it before games or practice all through college...

Optimum Nutrition Whey.

When you are working out and trying to put on mass you need to be going approx 1000-2000 calories above your daily needs. Usually around 3-5k calories a day. It needs to consist of a 45/35/20 Complex Carbs/Protien/Fat diet. Complex cards are pastas, whole wheats, etc. Protien shakes help bring the protein part up, without having to consume huge amounts of fatty meats. The fat part needs to be healthy fats, like flacseed oil.
