Best way to cook a filet mignon?
Always eat it, never really cook one myself. Typically a NY Strip grill guy not a mignon chef. Friend who owns a butcher shop gave me two of his best bacon wrapped mignon's, twice baked stuffed potatos, and some garlic shrimp this weekend. Noticed online a lot of broiler talk, but friends at work say to grill the filets. Any ideas? I dont want to F these pieces of art up.

Seriously, I am not sure if it is the best way to cook them, but I have cooked them on a grill, charcoal grill, and they turned out great.
I love my charcoal grill. ![]()

whatever you do, don't overcook them. Filet mignon, having very little fat content, goes from delicious and juicy to dry cardboard in a very small time windew, especially if you don't like your steak rare. I personally would sear in a cast iron pan on one side on high heat, then toss it in the oven at 500oF to finish it. ~2 mins per side. At least thats how I cook my ribeye/newyork strips

yeah, im leaning toward the iron pan myself due to a bit more control, especially this time of year with the snow and such.

+1 on the grill. i buy them frequently and soak them in premium asian oyster sauce, then i slap them on the grill and kook them till its medium cook with a slight pink/red color on the inside. they so small that i usually get only 2 to 3 big bites and they gone.

If you don't want to grill'em, definitely pan sear than oven bake to keep them juicy! I myself will always grill, no matter the weather!
It was 30 out this weekend and I grilled some ribeyes. It really isn't that bad, just put those coals in, let them burn for 30 minutes, then put the steaks on. A few minutes on each side, and you're done! |

Me too, when I do eat a steak it's outside the house and it's def a filet once and awhile I'll tackle a shell steak.
If you are going to cook 'em @ home the only way is the bbq grill. Even if you have to stand out in the cold. Technique wise it depends on how you like it. Whatever you decide..... enjoy. ![]() |

I just made some last night... wrapped em with a strip of bacon, season both sides with kosher salt and pepper. Heat up some olive oil in an oven safe pan on the stove, and sear each side 3 minutes. Then throw in some rosemary (fresh if you have it) and finely chopped garlic, and put it in a 375 over for about 10 minutes for medium rare. When you pull em out, put a pat of better on each steak and let em rest for a few minutes. This was for 2 8oz steaks... came out great

I use a small (cheaper) round grill.. I put the charcoal on one side only and light it up.. this makes a hot and cool side of the grill.. throw the steak on the cooler side and let it cool with the lid over it.. I like my steak rare =) but just leave it on the cooler side..
of course if you have the better grills the top part works fine =P but grilling FTW
