Bill my Mother and Mother in laws recipes are some of the ones I like best.
Besides that I have a few dozen cookbooks, but to be real honest, the internet is a wealth of information and I peruse the internet when I want to try something new and pick out the recipe that appeals to me. Of course I do pick up a lot of new ideas from the Food Channel on TV as well.

What I would like to know what the real Chef's on this site use or reccommend. 6MTzer how about some tips for us amateurs.

"To Serve Man"

Seriously, My favorite would be an antique one I have. Years ago it was not uncommon to see cures for rheumatism and headaches right next to grandma's apple pie.

Of course the Larousse Gastronomique would be right up there.

Is Larousse Gastronomique a book that an amateur can learn from and readily use?

I would say no, it is more like the bible for classic cooking.

My wife got me a grilling cookbook awhile ago from Men's Health and it's probably been my favorite. A good part of it is done by Anthony Bourdain.

Whoa! Mine did too a couple a years ago. It's a great cookbook from the BBQ university.

I have to say, anything from Mario Batailli is awesome too.

This is my all time favorite cookbook.

It's part cookbook part history book, but it's all awesome. It truly has a little of everything.

She got me it last June for my b-day. I am sure you could find it somewhere, it's worth the purchase IMO.

From Biba's Italian Kitchen by Biba Caggiano
by Harper Collins Publishers

I think this is the closest to my grandmother's cooking that I've found. Everything is simple, fresh, and the writing style is easy to understand.
Each recipe I've tried has been delicious.
