Where did you learn how to cook?

Who taught you how to cook, was it your parents, did you take a cooking class, maybe watching shows, or self taught..

I watched the cooking channel before, but not until recently I actually started learning from it, because I moved out about 6 monts ago and started to cook..

I am definetly a self taught, sometimes it turns out good, sometimes not but I like to experiment..I think i'm getting alot better at it..

Its all about feel, when I cook, there is no science or recipe I go by, I just get hints and then i'm off..

hopefuly by the end of the year, I will be able to create fancy dishes..

I'm up to 3 dishes now..

Took a food science class in high school. Senior year. Wanted an easy A and free breakfast. But, I actually got into it and been trying new things ever since.

Completely self taught here. Everything I have learned has been through trial and error and just trying numerous dishes. A formal cooking class would be a great experience and would like to do that at some point.

+1. Although my mother gave me some important tips. She also makes a bbq sauce that I think she should bottle and sell...it's that good. I've tried and tried and tried to make the sauce like her. Forget it. lol.

I learned a lot from cooking shows, Alton Brown's Good Eats shows in particular. Rent or buy the DVD's, they are great at understanding food and cooking techniques. After being inspired by cooking shows, I would set out to re-create the dish or use the techniques learned and applied them to different recipes.

I probably subconsciously learned a little from watching my mom cook as a kid.

I did take a knife skills class, which greatly helped in learning how to properly and quickly prep foods. I highly recommend this to everyone. Benefits: you'll learn how to properly hold knives which reduces effort and cramping, you'll learn how to cut certain veggies and what mince, dice, julienne, brunoise, oblique cuts mean. If you can efficiently wield your knife, you can prep foods faster and save time!

I took the class at Sur La Table. I believe Whole Foods offers it too.

My Father owned several restaurants where he was the Chef, I guess that was the start of it.

My father taught me a lot as well, but I think the most important thing he taught me was to not be afraid of experimenting.

I learned by watching my Mother, Grandmother and Grandfather (fabulous cook, but couldn't smell anything, Polio) I just watched them and when I went off to school, I put all that to work. Learned the rest on my own.

Good thread Donnie

I learned to cook mostly by trial and error. The first time I barbecued steaks was when I was 12. It was FANTASTIC! I made up some marinade with whatever spices we had in our cupboard.

I also learned by following recipes. My grandmothers also contributed to my education in the kitchen.

My mother is a fantastic cook. Very creative in the kitchen. I guess I just inherited that gene.

After a while you just know what's going to taste good together. My marinades are very famous among my friends, and my parents ALWAYS make me create the marinade for whatever we cook at the holidays. LOL

Mom's cordon bleu, dad's got a knack for grilling. Grew up in europe and it was just a way of life... dinner always had three courses at a minimum, so we all learned to pick up something in the kitchen.

Well, except my sister... but she's a champ at eating it!

I learned a lot from my Mom, cooking shows and from trying out different recipes by myself. It's always fun coming up with new stuff, especially if it's a success. If I won the lotto, I'd quit my job and go to culinary school

From my mom, usually self taught; reading cookbooks to watching on food network!
