Homemade Pizzas

My wife and I enjoy making a good homemade pizza once in awhile. In fact, we never order pizzas out and just make them ourselves. We always use a whole wheat pizza mix for the crust. Most of the time, we make healthy style pizzas that have a thin crust, chicken, fresh mushrooms, onions, green peppers, and occasionally spinach. Sometimes though when we want to indulge a little we'll make a thick crust pizza and have more traditional toppings like ground beef, pepperoni, ham, salami, italian sausage, and lots of mozza. They are pretty darn tasty.

So what is everyone else's style of cooking homemade pizzas? Thick crust or thin crust? What toppings do you put on? What type of pizza sauce do you use?

It's a whole wheat mix that I buy at my local grocery store. You just add water and let it rise.

Pizza dough is very simple. Its flour of your choice wheat or white, make something that looks like a volcano in the middle and warm water with your yeast. Then pull the flour from the edges to the middle. The dough should be slightly sticky so add more flour if its sticking to your fingers. Get a bowl drizzle some olive oil or spray with Pam put dough place a kitchen towel over and let rise. I also use the same dough to make calzones. I like to put black olives on my pizzas but not from a can.

Pizza stones are great if you make pizza a lot. Cook's Illustrated had a recipe for grilled pizza, which is really good. The dough is a little firmer so it stands up to grilling better.

To do grilled pizza, roll out the dough and brush a little olive oil on 1 side. Put it oiled-side-down on a hot grill and let it cook for 1.5-2 min. Take off the grill and put some toppings on the cooked side and slide it back on the grill and close the lid. cook for 2-3 more minutes or until cheese has melted.

My friend had one and it cracked because we put it in the oven too late after turning it on. Pampered Chef replaced it for free!

I did the exact same thing when we first got it. PC replaced ours now problem as well. IIRC, they have a lifetime warranty.

I've always wanted to make pizza at home. What temp do you usually bake at? What kind of sauce do you use (homemade or store bought, what if homemade please share your recipe)?

I typically cook my thin crust pizzas at 375 and thick crust pizzas at 400. I have always used store bought pizzas sauces, but would certainly try a homemade one if someone has a good recipe. I usually buy a garlic and basil pizza sauce.
