how much do you spend when making dinner at home?

so I make a lot of stuff outta the box (yeah, I know, not the greatest). Anyway, I made some tortellini tonight that was absolutely delicious, it was worth the work, but after it was all said and done I realized I probably spent $12 for dinner I made myself, which is a bit pricey IMO.

If I'm making food I generally spend $4-5 and can make a decent meal, how much do you guys spend on average?

HHhmm, SS, good question. I really never thought about how much I spend when I cook at home, which is a lot more than me going out.

For example tonight, I had some leftovers from last night. I cooked a whole package of turkey sausage and some rice. I must've spent about $4 tonight cooking home including the gas from the stove I'd used for cooking. Then the leftovers, I'm packing them for lunch tomorrow along with a side of garden salad and some fruit for snack.

I feed our family of 3 on $10 to $12 a meal for dinner. That is pretty much the max other than some rare occasions. It would be less if Lee ate more than about 6 things requiring me to often make 2 meals.

Hmm, good question Sam. I never cook anything out of the box as everything I cook is from scratch. It really depends on the meal I am cooking, but I can spend anywhere from $10 to $50 cooking a meal at home. I'd say our average would be probably be around $15 or so.

It varies. It could be about 15.00. The meat is the most expensive though.

So here is my supper that I am currently cooking for my wife when she gets home from work tonight. Two boneless skinless chicken breasts marinated in my own homemade asian spice, topped with fresh mushrooms and fresh tarragon from my herb garden. I will be serving it with long grain brown rice and fresh yellow/green beans. The supper cost me about $9.

Same here Tito. We never buy canned/frozen veggies and our meats are always fresh.

Tonight, I'm making G-Girl's garlic chicken! I'm having it w/ brown rice and fresh corn on the cob.

It'll cost me about $12, but that'll stretch till tomorrow's leftover lunch!

That would depend entirely on what is being prepared. Dinner for two might average $10-12. At least 2/3 of the time that would leave left overs for lunch for 1 or 2 portions. Our monthly groceries (including sundries) averages $475 which is about $16 per day.

Same, same. Being in Michigan, we have some of the best local produce and for a very reasonable price. Of course...I used none of it last night, however.

I always wind up spending at least just as much when I cook at home as if I went out to dinner. But the satisfaction for me is in cooking the meal, knowing its fresh, and knowing is prepared in a way that I'll be happy with.

I do a fairly large dinner once a week for 2-3, and I typically spend $50-75 on just the fresh ingredients...that doesn't include all the stuff I typically already have(olive oil, rices, pasta, spices, etc).

Hey Tin, have you checked the salt content on those CupONoodles, that's
some really bad stuff!
Last nights dinner....BBQ wild salmon..11 minutes in my smoker after it's been
sautéed in various sauces. Coleslaw with lots of carrots and Hidden Valley
coleslaw dressing....Cob corn picked daily at one of the stands on Hwy 126
really tastes better than the crap grocery stores sell....cost close to $17
and it tastes better than the restaurants dinners.
