Living alone

Well as some of you might know my girlfriend moved out and I live alone now.

Does any one else live alone here?

What do you do about food? I never feel like cooking for myself because its hard and a lot of food gets left over and goes to waste. So I've been going to my parent's house for dinner as much as I can.

Monday to Wednesday though I won't even have time to make anything or go to my parents' house because of work and school. I'll only have about 30 minutes after work before I'll have to leave to school.

Do you guys have anything to recommend I can buy to eat that I can prepare really fast? Something like hot pockets, but more filling and healthy.

Eating out can get pretty expensive.

Baked beans: Heat in a matter of minutes
Frozen veggies: Take just a few minutes to heat
Frozen chicken strips or breasts (NOT fried): Strips take like 20-25 minutes, breasts take 40 or so at 375
Pasta: Quick and easy
Stir-fry vegetables: They sell them frozen and they go great with chicken and pasta. You don't have to make it all at once.

These are the things I usually eat when I'm pressed for time.

What my old roomie and I did in college was make a big meal on Sunday (something that would keep like a good pasta) and then store it in Glad containers and then just reheat it quickly throughout the week for dinner.

I'm also on the verge of moving out. But stuck between 2 choices. Move in with my girlfriend have a house to ourselves. We've been together bout 3.5 years great girl cooks amazing cleans everything and let's me have my fun on the side too, meets, mod the car, poker, etc. Or move in with a couple of my good friends into a 3 bedroom house (less expensive) Any insight? Sorry for hijacking but I'm very confused.

I cook for a living and don't eat at home much, I do keep a few things around for emergences, such as:

Bertolli's pasta entrées are good for a quick meal, they are not cheap though.

For TV dinners, Boston Market is the best. Stay away from Hungry Man, Swanson and Lean Cuisine. Marie Calendar has a few good one's also.

As far as Hot pockets, the Pepperoni Calzone is the best.

Bratwurst is good for a quick hot sandwich.

Check your supermarket Hormel section, they have ready to go meat loaf, turkey, mashed potatoes, smashed potatoes, pot roast, etc. All heat and serve.

For breakfast, I always made eggs occasionally with sausage, or got those sausage, egg & cheese biscuits.

Lunch- usually sandwiches

Dinner-
I've also gotten kinda hooked on Zatarans jambalaya w/ cheese or pasta jambalaya or red beans and rice cooked with sausage. I like it b/c it's simple and doesn't really take too long.

Hot pockets are okay, but after a while even the thought will make u wanna barf. Pasta is also easy and fairly quick.

Bertolli is good, but not really cheap. I'd also cook just about anything on the George Foreman (burgers, brats, hot dogs, etc). Instant/Easy mac was also a good option. When I lived w/ my roommates we also had a deep fryer, which while it made really good food (chicken strips/nuggets, mozzarella sticks, taquitos, etc) but really bad for you. Other than that it was takeout from a local chinese joint or pizza.

Granted, I'm in college and don't have a ton of time, but when I do, I love cooking a nice meal.

+1 for the Tyson frozen bags of chicken whatevers... I like to get the pre-cooked white meat chicken strips and throw them in the toaster oven for about 12 min.

Throw them on some Sara Lee whole grain honey white bread and a couple of pickles and you got yourself a quick samich!!

I need to get me a toaster oven. Firing the regular oven takes too long for a quick meal.

Thanks for all the information guys. I should not be hungry now. Haha.

I live alone now and it is pretty sweet. I usually just cook vast meals and eat the same thing for 3 days... sounds kinda boring but it really saves money and allows me to eat great food like T bone steaks + baked potato + salad + veggies for 3 days in a row... what could be better? Best part is cooking a ton of extra takes almost no extra effort versus cooking the same thing just for yourself, you also have to cook much less often.

I used to switch up a bit by just having a few different ones in the freezer. Take em out in the morning into the fridge and they're ready to go for dinner.

Great idea for a thread. Keep it coming. I also live alone.

For me.....I tend to do the same as pattyskin. Cook a large meal, and eat it for 2 to 3 days.

Yeah I'm spending too much time cooking each night - I need to just make 1 to 2 meals a week in large quantities for dinner

What's the issue with LC's? I used to take them for lunch at work quite a bit.

Don't go by what I ate when I lived alone; I ate 3 different meals: T-bone steak, a large plate of spaghetti, or a whole pan of Hamburger Helper. Yeah, I gained about 20 pounds but I was hitting the gym hard every night so it was 'good' weight for the most part.

It was a long time ago but early in my bachelor days I did the same.

I like your idea. Like pattyskin, I usually cook food for at least 2 days since it just seems to be way easier/less time consuming, but after about 2 days I get sick of it. Now, if I was to freeze it and keep a few, I could cook only once or twice a week, and have a different thing every night.

The only downside is the food doesn't always taste as good, but I guess if I warm it up in a pan instead of the microwave that might help. I need to just find a wife who can cook for me (or at least split the cooking with me). One of my office mates has a wife who is a stay at home mom and he lives 2 min from work so when he goes home for lunch he has a hot, freshly made meal waiting for him. I'm really jealous.
