Should I buy an exhaust for vortech?
I decided with going with a vortech but I am not sure if I need a new exhaust or not. Right now my car is stock and I would like to keep the stock exhaust if I can. If anyone can tell me about what is recommended and why that would be great. I dont mind missing out on a little power because I am keeping stock exhaust.

It doesn't sound like you know what you're getting yourself into but to get the full potential of your SC without going into too high of boost, you're gonna want to run a true dual exhaust or a 3 inch single exhaust, along with high flow cats or test pipes. But not only will you need exhaust you'll need a fuel pump, some sort of engine management, oil catch can, gauges, several other things im forgetting and $$$ for when stuff goes wrong. If you're gonna do it, do it right...

If you want to keep the stock exhaust and get a SC . It would be perfectly OKAY !!!!
Vortech designs the dam thing to go with stock exhaust . People always think you have to start changing parts out on a perfectly good kit . If you want to start p[ushing the whp on the kit . Then you might start modding the kit . If you just want the whp the kit provides out of the box . THATS COOL !!!!

I know about the support mods I need for a vortech but I would like to keep my car as stock as possible. I want it to be a sleeper. The money isnt the issue, of couse saving 1000 on exhaust would be nice thats not why I don't want one. I am only trying to get 380whp right now and if I decide to get more power later than I will. For right now I just need to know if it is necessary, I don't care if my car doesnt have a cool sounding exhaust I just care about reliablility.

If you want to up the boost 1 or 2 psi.......the stock kit and stock exhaust should be okay . Dont go replacing parts till you need to

380 whp is not going to happen with an out of the box vortech with a stock exhaust.
if you are really set on that high of hp, you'll need the 2.87 pulley, bigger injectors, fuel pump, and a real ems. along with an exhaust and HFC/test pipes.

stock exhaust with vortech is perfectly fine. turbomaxima ran that setup for many months.
as for your 380rwhp, it will just be harder without more supporting mods. you havent mentioned if you're 5at or 6mt yet.

Yes, the supercharger will work with the stock exhaust. However, You will create an enormous amount of back pressure by retaining the stock exhaust.
By stepping up to a true dual free flowing exhaust http://www.fastintentions.com/exhaus...ti_default.htm you will decrease the amount of back pressure 10 fold. I have always had the old saying, "in order to only do it once you need to do it right". This will allow you to make more power at a much lower boost level efficiently. Sure anyone can turn the boost up to achieve the number that they want. However, that will eventually break components. It is crucial to have a good exhaust system on a supercharged car. Your supercharger creates parasydic loss. In short, that means it takes power to make power. Your supercharger is belt driven. Your engine crank turns everything. Now the harder that you make your supercharger work, the more strain it will put on your crank. In a nutshell why not allow everything to work easier and by allowing your supercharger to breathe better you are doing so... Thanks, Tony |

So here are my list of parts just so everyone knows that I do know a little about how to get to my goals. I will be getting 550cc injectors, walbro, utec and the 2.87 pulley. I understand that I will have to push the boost a little to reach my goals and if I don't make it there thats okay. I just wanted to know if exhaust was a must have item like injectors or a fuel pump. Thanks everyone for your input. I think I am going to run it with a stock exhaust for a few months and see how I like the power I get with it and decide from there. And I have a 6mt. Thanks everyone.

good luck with your setup. Don't know what state your from, but make sure you go to a good shop to have it tuned.
IMO ,You might want to run at least 600cc injectors with the 2.87. Don't want to run out of fuel, when you start modding in the future. ![]()

I don't know if you guys have read the vortech threads on my350, and also with my own experience I think most of you guys are wrong. Exhaust on the vortech really does nothing. The vortech needs velocity (not back pressure), so a free flowing exhaust does in fact work counterproductive to the entire SC setup. The SC setup is not like a turbo system which acts in itself like an additional muffler. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
